The evolution of money.

Throughout human history, the concept of money has undergone a remarkable evolution. From simple barter systems to the complex world of digital currencies, money has played a pivotal role in shaping economies and societies.

In the earliest stages of human civilization, people relied on the barter system for trade. Goods and services were exchanged directly. However, as both parties had to want what the other was selling, transactions were not always smooth. To overcome this, communities turned to commodity money. This form of money had intrinsic value, like precious metals or agricultural products. Items like shells, salt, and grains were universally accepted for trade, providing a common medium of exchange.

In the 6th century BCE, the Lydians, an ancient people of Asia Minor, introduced the first official currency: the Lydian stater. These coins, crafted from electrum, a natural blend of silver and gold, were stamped with symbols to guarantee their authenticity and value. This marked a significant step towards standardised currency, enabling both internal and external trade, catapulting Lydia to great economic prosperity.

Around 1260 CE, the Mongol-founded Yuan dynasty in China made a groundbreaking shift from coins to paper money. Unlike the Tang dynasty, they created a unified, national system that was not backed by silver or gold. The currency issued by the Yuan was the world's first fiat currency, known as Jiaochao. This innovation drastically altered the financial landscape, allowing for greater flexibility in transactions. Merchants could now avoid the weight and security issues associated with carrying large quantities of coins. Although the Mongols at first preferred to have every banknote backed up by gold and silver, high government expenditures forced the Yuan to create fiat money in order to sustain government spending.

Meanwhile, in Europe, metal coins continued to dominate until the 16th century. The Renaissance era saw the emergence of banking institutions in Italy. Banks issued promissory notes, essentially IOUs, allowing individuals to deposit their valuable assets securely. These notes could be exchanged for goods or redeemed for the equivalent value in coins. This gave rise to modern banking systems, creating a foundation for financial institutions that endure to this day.

As empires expanded, the need for standardised currencies became imperative. Colonial powers established central banks to regulate and issue currency. The Bank of England, founded in 1694, was a notable example. Central banks provided stability to economies by managing the money supply, interest rates, and controlling inflation. They began to play a key role in dealing with financial challenges, and managing the national debt.

Countries with a better managed currency, more sophisticated banking systems, and lower levels of national debt could borrow more cheaply during times of conflict, thus enjoying a significant advantage over their enemies. On the other hand, countries where the government was less successful at managing its currency, and where excessive currency debasement led to serious inflation, were in a much weaker position when looking for funding.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, many countries adopted the gold standard. This system pegged a country's currency to a specific amount of gold. With a fixed exchange rate to gold, the currency's worth was directly tied to the country's gold reserves. This mechanism helped establish a deeper trust in a nation's monetary system, bolstering international trade and investment.

However, the lack of flexibility of the gold standard also gave rise to economic challenges, particularly during times of crisis. Economists like John Maynard Keynes argued that the fixed supply of gold constrained a nation's ability to respond effectively to economic downturns. This was particularly evident during the Great Depression, when countries adhering to the gold standard found their hands tied in implementing monetary policies to stimulate their economies.

In the mid-20th century, in the wake of the economic upheaval brought about by the Great Depression and the strains of World War II, nations gradually began to abandon the gold standard. The Bretton Woods Conference of 1944 marked a pivotal moment, where world leaders convened to reshape the international monetary system. Under this new framework, currencies were pegged to the US dollar, which was, in turn, linked to gold. This system offered more flexibility compared to the rigid gold standard, allowing for adjustments in exchange rates to accommodate economic fluctuations.

Ultimately, by the early 1970s, mounting economic pressures and a series of currency crises led to the complete dissolution of the Bretton Woods system, effectively severing the last remaining ties between major currencies and gold. This marked the definitive end of the gold standard era. While it had served as a cornerstone of global finance for close to two centuries, the system's limitations had become increasingly evident in the face of modern economic complexities.

In the 21st century, a new era of payment methods emerged with the introduction of mobile payments. Enabled by portable electronic devices like smartphones and tablets, these transactions streamlined commerce, evolving from text-based payments to even allowing cheque deposits via camera apps.

Simultaneously, virtual currencies emerged as a digital representation of money, offering lower transaction fees and decentralised authority. Bitcoin, introduced in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, spearheaded this revolution, paving the way for other virtual currencies like Ethereum, XRP, and Dogecoin.

The history of money is a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability. From bartering in ancient marketplaces to the introduction of cryptocurrencies in the digital age, money has undergone remarkable transformations. As we stand on the cusp of a new era in electronic transactions, one thing remains certain: as long as humans require a medium of exchange, the story of money will continue to unfold, shaping the economic landscapes of generations to come.

IELTS Topic: Money

Posted by David S. Wills | Jul 29, 2018 | IELTS Tips | 4

IELTS Topic: Money

Can money make you happier ? Does money make the world go round? That’s what some people say. In any case, money is important in our daily lives and so it is also a topic that may come up in the IELTS exam. Therefore, you should be ready to talk about it.

Money in the IELTS Exam

Money could theoretically appear in any part of the IELTS exam. It is probably most common in the listening exam , where it often appears in section 1. In this case, you may hear someone talking about prices, and you should write down the correct answer – for example, £15. It is pretty simple, except sometimes the speaker may talk about things like annual fees, subscriptions, and discounts. These are all common concepts within the topic of money, and you should be aware of them.

Here’s an example transcript:

The new prices for annual membership are five hundred pounds for adults and three hundred pounds for children. There is a one-time set-up fee of fifty pounds, although this month were are running a promotion, so there is a discount of 30%.

You can see that there are many numbers relating to different sorts of prices. Section 1 of the IELTS listening example will not be particularly challenging, but you should be aware of words like the following:

  • Subscription

Money could come up in the reading exam in various ways. It could be the topic of a passage, or else it could be simply mentioned. For example, if you are reading a passage about the scale of Hollywood movies these days, they might have information about box office sales or payments to actors and actresses.

Often you will have to scan a text to find the right number, and it will not be straightforward. You may simply be able to scan to find all the numbers in the text and then search for the correct answer, or else you may have to scan for an idea and then look for numbers around it. This is a key reading skill that you should practice often before an exam.

Money often features in IELTS writing task 1 in a line graph , table , bar chart , or pie chart . You might have to describe changes in price over time, or compare the prices of various goods. I have many articles on this website about describing trends and making comparisons, but you should also know how to write about money in general.

dollar bills

For example, you should do the following:

  • The average price per kilo rose to $450 in 1997.
  • The average price per kilo rose to 450$ in 1997.

In other words, don’t write the dollar or pound symbol after the number. This is not common in English. You may be able to write out the word or three-letter abbreviation after the number, however:

  • 4,000 dollars

When using smaller parts of currency , you’d best keep your writing simple:

Instead of writing:

  • Two dollars and fifty-two cents
  • Seven pounds and sixty-four pence

The reason for this is simply that it’s too easy to make a mistake. If you were to write pounds and cents, it would be incorrect. In the UK, we use pounds and pence.

However, generally, in this part of the exam, you will use larger figures such as thousands, millions, and billions. Take the time to learn about these units as they become increasingly important in the twenty-first century.

Often, the IELTS writing task 1 will show units on a line graph like this:

(in millions of dollars) … 3,400

So what would you write? 3,400 million dollars?

3,400,000,000 is written as $3.4 billion.

This is a common feature and I’ve seen countless students make the above mistake.

In IELTS writing task 2, money is a possible topic. Usually, it’s about whether money is the “most important” factor in happiness or job satisfaction. Here is an example:

The most important thing about a job is how much money you earn. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In this case, you wouldn’t need much specialist vocabulary. Instead, you could use quite basic money-related words and phrases, which we’ll cover in the next section.

Money could well appear in any of the three parts of the speaking exam . In part one, you may be asked about shopping or spending habits. Then, in part two, you may have to describe a major purchase or something valuable. In part three, the questions will be more difficult and may be similar to those mentioned for the writing task 2 above: money and happiness, etc.

It is unlikely that you would need to be able to talk about prices in depth, but a good grasp of numbers if important whether you’re learning English for travel , work, or study.

You will definitely need to know basic money vocabulary, so we’ll look at that next:

Money Vocabulary for IELTS

Here are some good nouns related to money:

  • Credit card
  • Cheque (British English)
  • Check (American English)
  • Bank account

And some very useful verbs:

save money ielts

I’ll use some of the words from above, as well as some others, to form some useful examples:

Q: Are you good at saving money? A: No, I’m hopeless at saving money. As soon as I get my paycheque , I go out and spend it. I hope that in future I can save and invest wisely, but right now I’m more likely to borrow from my friends just to make ends meet .

Here’s a more general example:

After a cheque is deposited in the bank , it can take several days for the money to clear . Once it has been successfully added to your account , you can then withdraw the cash , if you like.

Money Verbs and Prepositions

Here’s a lesson that I posted on my Facebook page a while ago that explains how we collocate certain verbs and prepositions when talking about money. Note that these can also be used for time and energy!

Example Answer for IELTS Writing Task 1 [Money topic]

I will write a sample answer for an IELTS writing task 1 question that relates to money and spending.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The graph below shows the amount of money spent on books in Germany, France, Italy and Austria between 1995 and 2005. Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information below. Write at least 150 words. The line graph shows how much money is spent on books in four different European countries over a ten year period. In each of the countries, people spent more on books in 2005 than 1995. German people spent the most money on books over the entire period, ranging from $80 million to about $95 million. The total spent increased through the late nineties before declining at the beginning of the new millennium. It finally rose to a new high by the end of the period. France showed a similar trend, although instead of falling, the amount of money stalled between 2001 and 2003, before growing to a final high of about $75 million in 2005. Italy began the documented period as the third highest spender on reading material, but ended up spending the least after Austria overtook them between 2003 and 2005. Italy’s total fluctuated between fifty and sixty million dollars, and then ended the period a little higher. Austria, on the other hand, grew sharply except for a brief period of stagnation from 1999-2001, and finished at a little over $70 million.

Idioms and Expressions about Money

I don’t typically recommend learning idioms for IELTS . Yes, they are somewhat useful in general English; however, they are quite informal, and so at least for IELTS writing there isn’t much place for them. In the speaking exam, you may be able to use some idioms but they often sound unusual and out of place, so I recommend my students to stick to more conventional language. In some cases they are important to know, and when it comes to money I think there are some good idioms and expressions that you may be able to incorporate into an answer:

  • Beg, borrow, and steal – meaning to be desperate for money. Not literally doing these things. Example: I really wanted to get those tickets, and I did. I had to beg, borrow, and steal, but I managed it!
  • Make ends meet – to be able to pay your bills and cover basic expenses. “I’m really struggling to make ends meet these days with so many new expenses.
  • Money doesn’t grow on trees – it is not easy to get money and it shouldn’t be wasted. Example: Don’t leave the lights on all day. I have to pay the bills, you know, and money doesn’t just grow on trees.
  • Made of money – to be very rich. Example: I can’t afford to buy you a new dress. I’m not made of money!
  • Money to burn – meaning an excess of money or a willingness to spend money that you have. Example: I can’t wait for the weekend. I’m gonna go shopping because I have money to burn.
  • Burning a hole in [your] pocket – to have money and feel a need to spend it. Example: My sister always spends her allowance quickly. It just burns a hole in her pocket.
  • Throw money at – to give money carelessly or use money wildly to solve a problem. Example: Once he made his first billion, he just threw money at every problem he faced.

Here’s a video I made featuring 25 money idioms:

A rocket on a space background symbolises the importance of practicing with these authentic 100 IELTS essay topics

100 IELTS Essay Topics for IELTS Writing

Let me start by saying that by far the best resource for authentic IELTS essay topics are the Cambridge 1 – 13 books. These are real past IELTS exam papers and, therefore, provide students with the highest quality questions for all parts of the test. However, what do you do if you have finished the Cambridge books? Or you struggle with one particular type of question and want a lot of that specific type of practise?

Well, until now, people have relied on questions that were “memorised” by test-takers(often incorrectly), or written by well-meaning teachers who have no specific education in test creation. As a result, many of the “IELTS questions” on the Internet are worded incorrectly. And, as a professional exam writer ( yes, I work creating academic exams for universities ), I know how damaging it can be if even one word in a question is changed.

So, today I am sharing my list of 100 IELTS writing topics. Some are taken from old exam papers, a few are from the Cambridge books, but most are from my own course .  More importantly, I can guarantee that each of these questions is as “authentic” as a question can be.  Have fun (and let me know your favourite question in the comments!)

Keywords:  important for everyone, young people, save money for their future.

Sample Answer:

The importance of saving money for the future is a principle that has been widely advocated, encompassing individuals across all age groups, including young people. I fully agree with the statement that it is essential for everyone to save money for their future. This essay will explore the reasons for this stance and provide relevant examples to support the argument.

Firstly, saving money from a young age cultivates financial discipline and responsibility. When young people learn to manage their finances early, they develop habits that can lead to long-term financial stability. By understanding the value of money and the importance of budgeting, they are better prepared to handle financial challenges in adulthood. For instance, young adults who save regularly are more likely to avoid debt and are better positioned to invest in opportunities such as higher education, homeownership, or starting a business.

Secondly, saving money provides a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. Life is unpredictable, and emergencies such as medical issues, job loss, or unexpected expenses can arise at any time. Having savings can alleviate the stress associated with these situations and provide financial security. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals who had savings were able to cope better with the economic uncertainties compared to those without any financial buffer.

Moreover, early savings can lead to greater financial growth over time due to the power of compound interest. The earlier one starts saving, the more time their money has to grow. Investing even small amounts regularly can accumulate substantial wealth over decades.

Additionally, saving money can help young people achieve their life goals and aspirations. Whether it’s traveling, pursuing further education, or starting a family, having financial resources set aside makes it easier to accomplish these dreams. For instance, students who save part of their allowance or earnings can fund their studies abroad or take a gap year to explore different cultures without incurring debt.

In conclusion, saving money is a vital practice for everyone, including young people. It fosters financial discipline, provides a safety net, benefits from compound interest, and helps achieve life goals. While it is essential to save, it is equally important to find a balance that allows young people to enjoy their present while preparing for a secure future.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Answer: Money is the most important factor for achieving happiness. Agree or disagree?

feel free to call us    +61.4.50973975      [email protected]

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people believe that money is the most important factor for achieving happiness. However, others believe that happiness has nothing to do with money. Agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Happiness plays a crucial role in the life of every person. While some people believe that money is a major factor in achieving happiness, some others tend to oppose that view and feel that money has nothing to do with happiness. I strongly believe that money and happiness are different concepts altogether.

On one side of the argument, there are people who believe that money has a major role to play in the happiness of a person. Certainly, money is required to buy anything in this world. Right from daily meals to luxury homes, nothing comes for free. Thus, without money, it would be very difficult to live a comfortable life and hence it is easy to see why a person cannot be happy without money.

ielts essay topics money

On the other side of the argument, there are people who believe that money has nothing to do with happiness. Although a certain amount of money is required to lead a life and people cannot be happy without that survival amount, the level of happiness of a person does not increase with the money that he earns in excess. Happiness is a different concept. Every person finds happiness in different things and it is completely wrong to argue that the richest person is the happiest one. For instance, I recently saw a documentary on BBC in which a millionaire sent his son on a real-life internship to take up odd jobs. His son felt much happier when he earned money to buy food for a day. Thus it is easy to see why money does relate to happiness.

Happiness is a very important emotion and it is required for everyone to be content in life. This is essay discussed why a person needs a certain amount of money to be comfortable in life, but why money does not relate to happiness altogether. After having discussed the pertinent points related to the issue, I feel that the only logical conclusion is that money has nothing to do with happiness.

Band 7+: Some people think that the government should give money to creative people, such as artists and musicians. To what extent do you agree?

A increasing trend in today’s world is the emergence of the argument that some people think the government should give money to creative people, artists, and musicians. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the above statement, concerned with the notion that I agree with this statement using a practical approach.

At the outset, there are several reasons supporting my viewpoint. The most significant one related to artists and musicians includes betterment of society along with the growth of every individual on the planet. Thanks to the benefits offered, individuals can not only attain greater success and effectiveness but can also enhance efficiency, productivity, and quality of life with remarkable ease. Other factors impacted by the topic are that the government should give money to creative people.

However, another key factor to note is its potential to aid individuals in flourishing, advancing, and excelling across different fields and domains. Therefore, individuals involved in arts and music can expand their horizons and skills and develop qualities like commitment, dedication, and perseverance only by adhering to such a system. This clarifies why many support the assertion that the government should take action. Moreover, related to artists and musicians, other factors are also important to be taken into account.

To conclude, from my perspective, the government of Australia is taking a great initiative in educating its citizens against the negative aspects of the statement that creative people should receive wages from the government. Artists and musicians, citizens are being encouraged to adhere to applicable laws and regulations.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Money

01/08/2024 10:22 AM

General Rules:

ielts essay topics money

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, idioms and phrases, business phrases, do you prefer to save money or spend money.

Answer as a student:

I don't have so much money as I don't work. My parents give me some pocket change for school and occasionally I'd receive money as gifts during holidays. What usually happens Is I buy some things that I want with the little money I have, and then I run out of cash really quickly !

My Personal Answer:

I avoid spending as much as possible. I believe I'm a goal-oriented person and I like to save for a rainy day as well as for my own personal goals like buying an apartment, electronics , and traveling. I believe saving money is the responsible , mature , and reasonable thing to do for a person who wants to achieve more in life .

How do you save money?

What do you think about payment apps or mobile payments, do you use a credit card to buy things.

For a student or a teenager:

I'm not old enough to own my personal credit card , but I do use my mom's card from time to time , with her permission of course . These days there are so many things - purchases but also services like for education  we have to pay online , and a credit card is essential , even if we don't want to use one.

Do you think cash will still be popular in the future?

Is money important for a person's happiness.
