liberty university degree presentation ceremony

Liberty University alumni have witnessed God’s incredible work on campus and in students’ lives for over 50 years, and this weekend’s Homecoming festivities will be an all-out celebration of the miracles on the Mountain and decades of Training Champions for Christ .

Check-in for registered guests, and in-person registration will be in the Hancock Welcome Center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Families are encouraged to register in advance online in order to take full opportunity of the weekend’s events.

Homecoming events begin with Convocation at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Vines Center, where families can join Liberty students in worship and hear a message from pastor and author Joshua Broome.

For the first time, a familiar favorite Homecoming event, the annual family carnival, will be set up on the Academic Lawn. From 3:30-8 p.m. on Friday, families can enjoy carnival games, food trucks, a Ferris wheel, interactive photo booths, and live music from Strings and Heart. At 6:30 p.m., the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet will take place in the Montview Alumni Ballroom (tickets must be purchased online).

After a significant turnout last year, the Alumni Breakfast will be held in a larger venue this year, the Montview Alumni Ballroom, on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. In addition to reconnecting with fellow graduates and celebrating the enduring spirit of Liberty University, attendees will be able to meet with university leadership, including President Dondi E. Costin and Chancellor Jonathan Falwell, and Executive Director of Alumni Engagement Dr. Greg Tilley to learn more about how they can engage with Champions for Christ wherever they are. Registration for the 500-seat gathering is available.

Saturday afternoon will spread the game day spirit in the hours leading up to Flames Football’s matchup with UTEP at 6 p.m. The annual Homecoming parade down University Boulevard starts at 3 p.m., featuring university dignitaries, candy, floats, and the Spirit of the Mountain Marching Band. The Alumni Tailgate on the Outdoor Football Practice Field and the free Flames Fan Fest at the Indoor Football Practice Field open at 3:30 p.m. A Homecoming badge (given at check-in) is required to get food at the Alumni Tailgate.

Throughout the weekend, guests will have the option to purchase tickets to the men’s hockey game against University of North Carolina at 7 p.m. on Friday and multiple performances of the Alluvion Stage Company’s production of “ Anastasia .” Free for those who show their Homecoming badge, Liberty’s women’s volleyball team will be playing against the University of Virginia at 7 p.m. on Friday and against West Virginia University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Guests also have the opportunity to take tours of  Jerry Falwell Library Archives  or  Chaplains Museum  in the lower terrace of the library and the  Rawlings Scriptorium Museum  on the ground level of the Freedom Tower. Campus tours are also available from the Hancock Welcome Center.

MSFF executive director addresses Rotary Club

liberty university degree presentation ceremony

Submitted photo Mountain State Forest Festival Executive Director Heidi Bray, right, provided event brochures to Elkins Rotary Club President Tammie Rizzio and club members during her visit with the club.

ELKINS — Mountain State Forest Festival Executive Director Heidi Bray addressed the Rotary Club of Elkins, giving the group an update on the upcoming Festival. Bray, a native of Elkins, was named Executive Director in March of 2023. A graduate of West Liberty University, Bray was a member of the inaugural class of Leadership Randolph 2023, is a member of the Leadership WV Class of 2024, is a mentor for Randolph County CLIMB, serves as vice president of the Elkins Kiwanis Club, and also serves as a board member for ArtsBank, Inc. She was a MSFF Assistant Director in 2022 and served as a Flower Girl and Maid of Honor in past Forest Festivals.

The Mountain State Forest Festival was begun in 1930 by members of the Elkins Business Men’s Association (now the Elkins-Randolph Chamber of Commerce) and the Women’s Club of Elkins. These groups met to discuss the establishment of an Elkins homecoming event. The event has been held every year since with the exception of the World War II years and during the COVID pandemic. This year’s Festival officially kicks-off on Saturday, Sept. 28 with the opening ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Jennings Randolph Federal Building Plaza. The Festival will run through Sunday, October 6, with the closing ceremony at 2 p.m..

Serving this year’s Festival as Maid Silvia is Miss Lilly Harper Ryan. Ryan, 20, is the daughter of Retired Lieutenant Colonel Jerry “Chip” Floyd and Amy Floyd of Ona, WV. She is the granddaughter of Frank and Laura Santmyer of Elkins, Jim and Diana Sturm of Huntington, Norwin and Donna Lilly of South Charleston, Joe and Janet Richards of Charleston, Sandra Dennison of Ona and the late Jerry Floyd of Ona. She has one brother, Jaxon Santmyer, and two sisters, Anna and Erin Floyd. A senior at Miami University of Ohio, Ryan will receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Disability Studies in December 2024.

Prior to kicking-off the fall 2024 Forest Festival events, the MSFF hosted Purse Bingo in April and its annual golf tournament in July. There will also be a poker run on Saturday, September 14. “Registration for the poker run begins at 9:00 at the Beverly Fire Department. The 140-mile ride will make stops in Buckhannon, Philippi, Thomas, and Elkins, before returning to the Beverly Fire Department for dinner and awards. $600 in prizes will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best hands, and overall worst hand. It’s been several years since we held the Poker Run, so we are looking forward to the participation and fun,” said Bray.

This year, the Festival will host 35 unique events with the first event, the Tennis, Pickleball and Racquetball Tournament, having been held over the weekend of September 7 and 8. The final event of the Festival (with the exception of the Closing Ceremony) will be the Muzzleloading Contest that is being held at the Izaak Walton League at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 6.

There are a couple of new events during this year’s Festival. The Tennis, Pickleball and Racquet Ball Tournament featured the addition of pickleball and racquetball and the game of Festival Feud will be featured on September 28 as part of the Kickoff Party at the Elkins Town Square. Teams from Big Timber Brewing, Davis Trust Company, Citizens Bank of West Virginia, Mountain Valley Bank and the Randolph County Fair will compete to display their knowledge of trivia. Everyone is invited to join in the festivities of the Kickoff Party. After Festival Feud, Vegas McGraw, a Tim McGraw tribute show will take the stage at 6:00 pm.

There will be a number of free concerts and performances throughout the week beginning on Sunday at 7:00 pm at the Rotary Amphitheater in the Elkins Town Square. Performers will include The Gandy Dancer Theater, the Chicks Tribute Show, an Evening of Dance, Boys in the Band – a Tribute to Alabama and will conclude with Still Surfin’ – a Tribute to the Beachboys on Thursday evening.

This year’s Distinguished Guest Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 3 at the Phil Gainer Center. The speaker will be author and speaker Janine Driver. Driver spent 16+ years cracking the code on human behavior as a federal law enforcement officer. “Janine is a body language expert and delivers a wonderful, interactive presentation,” said Bray. Tickets for the Distinguished Guest Dinner can be purchased at the Festival office located in the Wood Tech Center at 10 11th Street, online at www.forestfestival.com, or by calling the office (at the phone number below).

Another highlight of this year’s festival will be performances by the Pride of West Virginia, the WVU Marching band. The band will take part in the Grand Feature Parade and will also perform at the Jack Basil Field Show at Elkins High School on Saturday, October 5.

Live streaming will also return to this year’s Grand Feature Parade courtesy of Kolsun Media. “The live streaming will be through our YouTube channel @MountainStateForestFestival, which will be linked to our MSFF Facebook page and our website. Please subscribe, like, and share!” concluded Bray.

More information about the Mountain State Forest Festival, including a full schedule of events, can be found at www.forestfestival.com, on Facebook/Instagram (Mountain State Forest Festival) or by calling 304.636.1824. Event brochures can be found at numerous locations around Elkins including the Elkins Depot Welcome Center.
