Free Digital Reading Activities

Are you looking for digital reading activities to kick off your school year? It can be challenging to plan reading lessons when you’re still getting to know your students and getting to know what they know. You don’t want to bombard your students with too many skill-based reading activities before you’ve reviewed or taught the skills. This set of free digital reading activities designed for use at the beginning of the year is a great way to supplement your reading instruction, get to you know your students as readers, and review a few reading genres.

Download these digital reading activities to practice comprehension at the beginning of the school year.

About the Free Digital Reading Activities

This set of free reading digital activities includes six different texts; three fiction and three nonfiction.

The fiction texts include a mystery, a twisted fairytale, and a realistic fiction story. The nonfiction topics are emojis, snakes, and pyramids.

Each text includes comprehension questions that require the students to show their understanding of the text. The questions are:

  • multiple choice questions
  • fill-in-the-blank questions
  • true or false statements

The questions and activities included are strictly comprehension-based rather than skill-based. This makes it ideal for the beginning of the year, before your reading skill instruction has started.

Digital Reading Passages

Download these free digital and printable reading activities that are perfect for the beginning of the school year.

Each genre has a short text presented on one slide. The text passages are the perfect length for your students to read without being too much at once.

The texts are written at lower levels than is expected for 4th and 5th graders since this is the beginning of the school year. The levels are around a 3rd grade reading level.

The variety of genres included makes this a great way to review a few genres at the beginning of the year and get your students excited about what types of books they enjoy reading and are looking forward to reading this school year.

Multiple Choice Reading Comprehension Questions

Download these free reading digital activities with comprehension questions.

Each passage has its own set of multiple-choice questions. Your students will read the questions and the choices and then use a drag and drop element to show their answers. This makes it more engaging and interactive for your students instead of simply typing their answers in a text box.

Fill-in-the-Blank Sentences

Free reading comprehension passages and activities for upper elementary reading.

The second type of question is fill-in-the-blank. Your students will type a missing word or phrase into each text box based on what they read in the text.

Agree or Disagree Activities

Lastly, your students will read sentences that could be true or false. Each one requires your students to show whether they agree or disagree with the statement they read. If they disagree, there is a text box for your students to rewrite the sentence to make it true.

To make the activities more engaging, the drag and drop moveable pieces are related to the passage topic or theme. For example, in a story about missing donuts, your students will drag a moveable donut to a box to show they agree with each statement. If they disagree, the donut box will stay empty and they will need to rewrite the statement in the text box to make it factual.

Using the Digital Reading Activities

The best thing about these activities is that they are versatile depending on your needs. You can adapt them whether you want your students to work on them as a class, independently, in partners, or even in your small reading groups. They are easily projected on an interactive whiteboard for whole-class reading and discussion, or may be assigned independently through your virtual classroom interface.

Sight words only get more difficult as students get older, but they never lose their importance. For effective reading comprehension, students should have strong fluency skills. Working on 4th grade sight words can help to build those. Whether you use this as a whole class activity or in small centers, it is sure to help students with their sight word fluency!

31. Create a Comprehension Video Lesson

Creating a comprehension video lesson is super simple and could be very beneficial without your kids even knowing! You can use Edpuzzle to create a video, including any of your own or sourced material online, and add questions or prompts. The best part is, if your kids want to keep watching, they’ll need to answer the questions to move on!

32. Reading Comprehension Cubes

36. Inference Detectives

Becoming inference detectives is a great way to help students learn how to make inferences and draw conclusions! These activities are packed with so much fun and students will absolutely love solving them. Don’t worry they all come equipped with an answer key to help save teachers’ prep time!

37. Reading Quotes

A fourth-grade classroom is essential for reading comprehension and fluency. Having reading quotes around the room is one of the best ways to incline to students build a love for reading. One fun activity that my students love is creating posters of reading quotes! If we have some free time, I allow reading groups to choose a quote and create a poster.

38. For the Love of Reading

Giving students different devices that will motivate them to read is a great way to really spice up their comprehension and fluency. These punch cards are super simple and can be so motivating to students and parents.

Final Thoughts

Having tools for students to access will allow them to visualize and better understand the story or book they are working with in your class. You can either create these resources yourself and make one copy of your entire class to use or you can have students work with their hands to design their own copy of these crafts that they can always keep with them to refer back to when you tell them to or when they feel they need to.

Giving your students the opportunity to access these supports will build them for success and give them ownership of their learning.

Priscilla Araba Hagan

Awesome. This has become my go-to site for testing my students’ reading comprehension. Keep it up!

I love your website my kids benefit so much from everything you do! THANK YOU!!

Priscilla Hagan

This has been a great find. I love the stories and so do my students. I have particularly found the nondiction passages wonderful – the ones which appear in their reading books are often bland and not engaging – and so do my students. They’re learning so much and it’s stirring their curiosity to do their digging about the topics they most enjoy.

Since comprehension questions in our part of the world are not mcqs – they are usuallyquestions which require short answers – I usually dowload the passages and prepare my own questions, with maybe one or two mcqs from your question bank thrown in. Thus, my students cannot find answers and it makes them do the hard work of comprehending the passages.

I also underline some of the words and phrases and ask them to find words or phrases which mean the same and can replace them in the passage – that’s another important component of questions asked on reading comprehension passages in my part of the world, Ghana. Maybe those complaining about cheaters can use some of these strategies. They can also tweak the questions on this site to do away with cheating.

Mr. Morton, you’re amazing. Love, love this site. My students and I are the better for it.

Ayana Sanchez

Hello from Panama, this website has proven so helpful to help my students study for the TOEFL

Keshia Cabriole

Good Morning may we use the Redwoods and Arm Races Story for our study? I would like to say that the story and questionnaire will be a big help if you allow us to use your story to our study.

Of course. Best wishes!

Greetings from Egypt….I’ve been using this site for the past 3 years, and it never failed to impress me and my students. It’s very resourceful and I use it on daily basis. Wherever the owner of this site is, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

You are so welcome! Thank you for using my site.

Honestly, I am writing this short message from the far lower corner of Africa, all the way from Namibia. Coming across this website has just proven to me that truly good people still exist in this world,as opposed to my traditional name which means “Good people are extinct.” I am so grateful to the person who shared all this helpful and precious information. May God continue to fill your heart and life with gifts overflowing upto an eternal fold. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. I appreciate the kind words and hearing your story. I wish you the greatest possible success in all your endeavors.

Thank you so much for this. I am a 5/6 grader and I think my teachers will enjoy this too. I use this also over the summer so I can keep track of my smartness 🙂

You’re such an amazing person! Thank you for sharing these materials. They helped me a lot as an ELA middle school teacher. May God bless you!

Excellent passages

I am looking for material for a 10-12 reading comprehension class. Your materials are great, but a lower interest level from HS students. Any suggestions for upper levels?

Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful worksheets!

JHANNET VELÁSQUEZ

EXCELLENT WEBSITE!

Excellent and the really valuable resource.

Delores J. Mayes

My students has searched and found the answer keys to these readings. I wish there was a way the teacher’s could sign in for the content and keep the cheaters from having the honest kids miss out on these readings. What has our world gone to. This is so sad that my students would copy answers word for word and expect to get a 100% as well as their parents. We are growing a nation of untruth and cheaters.

Yeah, that is pretty frustrating.

It’s tough to keep the content free and open while preventing students from finding the answers.

One thing that might help is downloading the .RTF file and editing the titles of the assignments. A persistent student will still be able to find the answers, but that may make it a little harder.

Also, remember, cheaters are only cheating themselves! And the system and everyone else too, but mainly themselves! Best wishes!

Hi Ma’am Dolores. That happened to me years ago during the MDL (modular distance learning) in our country, Philippines. You know what I did, I shorten my URLs and add number 1 at the end of it. This way, they can no longer trace my resources.

State Test Data Show Continued Recovery in Math, Focus Needed on Reading

Media contact.

Katy Payne   she/her 360-764-0201

OLYMPIA––September 10, 2024 ––Today, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) released data from the spring 2024 state assessments. Overall, the data indicates that students are continuing a strong recovery in math and the need for a continued focus on literacy.

The tests, required each spring for students in grades 3–8 and 10, are one way of assessing the depth of each student’s knowledge and skills in math and English language arts.

Achievement levels on the state assessment represent a range of performance. Three of the four achievement levels indicate grade-level knowledge and skills, with increasing accuracy and complexity. While Level 1 indicates achievement that is not on grade level, Level 2 indicates foundational grade-level knowledge and skills, and Levels 3 and 4 indicate a student is on track for college-level learning without needing remedial classes.

“We often see the results of these tests being miscommunicated to mean something that they don’t,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “The state tests are not Pass/Fail and students who do not meet the college readiness proficiency standard are not necessarily below grade level in their knowledge. On the tests, students demonstrate their grade-level knowledge and skills along a continuum of complexity.”

For example, in assessing reading and comprehension in the third grade, a lower score indicates that the student was able to identify central ideas in texts of low or moderate complexity and distinguish between literal and non-literal meanings of words and phrases. On the same assessment, a higher score indicates that the student could identify explicit evidence or supporting details to support basic inferences in text of moderate-to-high or unusually high complexity.

A bar graph titled ‘Students Demonstrating Grade-Level Knowledge and Skills’ shows the percentage of students in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science across four performance levels: Advanced (yellow), Consistent (light green), Foundational (green), and Did Not Demonstrate (dark green). In ELA: Advanced - 22.9%, Consistent - 27.4%, Foundational - 20.5%, Did Not Demonstrate - 29.2%. In Mathematics: Advanced - 20.7%, Consistent - 19%, Foundational - 23%, Did Not Demonstrate - 37.3%.

Washington students continue to perform similar to or better than students enrolled in public schools across the U.S. on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the nation’s only assessment where statistically sound comparisons between states can be drawn. While NAEP data have shown a steady decline in reading performance across the nation since 2017, the data continue to show that Washington’s students make gains in both math and English language arts as they progress through the K–12 education system.

On the NAEP assessment, by the 8th grade, only 7 states and the Department of Defense (DoD) schools are statistically significantly outperforming Washington students in math and only 2 states and the DoD schools are statistically significantly outperforming Washington students in reading. The data place Washington’s 8th graders in the top 15 states in the country for their math and reading abilities.

As one way of assessing student learning recovery, OSPI monitors student progress and learning acceleration, as displayed in the chart below. The bars indicate student progress from the 2023 to the 2024 assessments.

A bar graph titled ‘Student Progress: 2023 to 2024’ shows the percentage of students meeting or exceeding college-readiness proficiency standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics. For English Language Arts: 42.3% met college-readiness proficiency standard in both years, 9.2% accelerated to meet college-readiness proficiency standard, 14.1% accelerated beyond grade-level progress; has not yet met college-readiness proficiency standard, 6.1% made grade-level progress; did not accelerate and 28.2% growth was not on grade level. For Mathematics: 35.6% met college-readiness proficiency standard in both years, 6.5% accelerated to meet college-readiness proficiency standard, 15.3% accelerated beyond grade-level progress; have not yet met college-readiness proficiency standard, 9.4% made grade-level progress; did not accelerate and 33.3% growth was not on grade level.

Under federal law, each state is required to administer statewide assessments in grades 3–8 and once in high school. At a system level, the data are used to identify opportunity gaps and influence investments and policy priorities to support student learning. As required by federal law, assessment data inform the level of support the state provides to each school through the Washington School Improvement Framework .

Families, policymakers, and community members should be cautious about viewing state assessment scores as the primary indicator of student learning and growth. Engagement, attendance, grades, and classroom-based assignments and tests provide more detailed, timely, and useful information about individual students' progress to their families and educators.

It should be noted that the required standardized tests aim to measure students’ knowledge and skills in one year compared to students at that grade level from the previous year. It shows overall trends and can indicate a student’s performance at one particular time, but is not designed to measure a single student’s ability and readiness over time.

Trends in the Data Over Time

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in fall 2021, assessment scores in Washington dropped by several percentage points, mirroring the declines across the nation. (Note: Fall 2021 tests were not typical in their timing and length but give an indication of student learning and progress.) While test scores are not yet back to what they were pre-pandemic, the recovery in scores since 2022 are evidence of the diligent efforts by Washington’s students, educators, and families.

The chart below shows the total percentage of students who demonstrated grade-level knowledge and skills (left) as well as the total percentage of students who demonstrated knowledge and skills consistent with the college readiness proficiency standard (right) in both math and English language arts.

online reading assignments for 4th graders

The math and English language arts charts below show, by grade level, the percentage of students who demonstrated grade-level knowledge and skills (left) as well as the percentage of students who demonstrated knowledge and skills consistent with the college readiness proficiency standard (right).

Math on track

The data show continued recovery and acceleration in math at nearly all grade levels, highlighting the intentional, focused efforts of Washington’s educators to support math recovery. (It should be noted that math scores saw the largest decrease during the pandemic.)

English Language Arts

ELA on track

In English language arts, the data indicate the need for a renewed focus on literacy. As our world becomes more digitally connected, young people are spending less time reading as they age—in particular, less time reading complex texts. A 2023 study by Scholastic found that, from 2010 to 2022, the number of youth aged 6–17 who identified as “frequent readers” (5–7 days per week) decreased by 9 percentage points to just 28% in 2022. Young people are spending more time texting, on social media, gaming, and watching online videos, and less time reading books.

“These trends in reading are occurring across the nation, but in Washington, we can be different,” said Reykdal. “Literacy is the foundational building block to future learning across all content areas, and we are doubling down on our focus on early literacy in particular.”

Superintendent Reykdal’s 2025 budget proposal to the Governor and Legislature will include funds for an artificial intelligence (AI) reading tool where students can practice reading out loud and receive immediate, individualized analysis and feedback from the tool to support their learning. The tool will provide real-time data to each child’s teacher, supporting educators to quickly identify students who may need additional support.

Superintendent Reykdal will also be requesting funding for continued support of the Imagination Library of Washington , a global nonprofit organization created by Dolly Parton where children birth through age 5 can receive a high-quality, age-appropriate book delivered to their home each month. The program aims to support early literacy as well as provide opportunities for parents and families to read to their children.

Viewing Assessment Results

Assessment results for math, English language arts, and science are available for the state as well as by school and school district on the Washington State Report Card . Users can also download data files from the Report Card if they are interested in more detail.     Parents and families should contact their child's school or school district for more information about their student's assessment results.
