What should you include in an auto repair shop business plan?

Are you writing a business plan for your auto shop because you’re seeking a loan ? Are you looking to clarify your path to creating a profitable, long-lasting business?

Independent auto repair shops account for three-quarters of all used car repairs in the U.S., so there are numerous examples of successful business models to guide your business.

But no two auto shops are exactly the same, so your plan will differ from others based on who you’ve identified as your target market , and what products and services you’re offering them.

Many business plans include the following sections:

  • Executive summary
  • Company overview and funding needs
  • Market and competitive analysis
  • Products and services
  • Operational plan
  • Business structure
  • Marketing and customer acquisition strategies
  • Financial planning and projections

One thing that makes an auto repair business plan different from many other service-based business plans is the sheer number of different products and services you might offer.

For instance, besides providing auto repair services, you might also sell parts, accessories, and car care products. Each might require a different promotional strategy to maximize the number of sales you make.

You may also want to think about how you’re pricing your services and if you have specific staffing requirements or training programs.

Here’s an example of an auto repair shop business plan outline.

The 8 elements of an effective auto repair shop business plan

1. executive summary.

The executive summary is a high-level overview of your business plan.

It shouldn’t be more than two pages, and even though it goes at the beginning of the plan, you should write it last. That’s because the executive summary is basically a condensed version of your business plan.

Your executive summary should include a mission statement that describes the purpose of your business and what sets it apart from competitors. Maybe you can guarantee a quicker service time than other shops in your area, or you offer a unique mix of services.

Your business plan helps you focus on these key factors that will help your auto repair shop thrive, and the executive summary makes your plan more credible to anyone reading your plan.

2. Company overview and funding needs

The company overview is a short summary of your auto repair shop, including its legal structure , location, and history.

If you aren’t seeking a loan or investment for your business, you can likely skip this section.

If you are writing the business plan for funding, clearly state:

  • How much you need
  • What you will use it for
  • How it will benefit the business

For instance, you may need funds to renovate your building, buy equipment, or place advertisements.

3. Marketing plan and competitive analysis

The marketing plan focuses on analyzing the auto repair shop market in your area, both in terms of potential customers’ needs, and how other shops in the area are (or aren’t) meeting those needs.

Researching your market involves researching local demand for auto repair services. For instance, a shop in a colder climate might have customers with different car issues than a shop in a warmer area. A shop in a lower-income market might get more customers with older vehicle models than one in a high-income market.

The market analysis should also examine your competitors , noting their strengths and weaknesses and how you can differentiate your shop.

4. Products and services

This section outlines the range of services your auto repair shop will offer. You can list them as bullet points, though you should also take some time to explain why you are offering them.

Start with your most profitable services, and work your way down. Also, separate any unique services products that differentiate your auto repair shop from competitors (you’ll need to do market research to know which services will set you apart).

A list of products and services could include:

  • Engine repairs
  • Transmission work
  • Suspension and steering
  • Brake repair
  • General maintenance
  • Auto part sales

You can also include specialty services like:

  • Classic car restoration
  • Hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance

5. Operational Plan

The operations section details the everyday functioning of the auto repair shop. It includes the shop’s operational hours, workflow management, and customer service policies.

The idea with this section is to cover the processes that you’ll deploy in your business to make sure your shop is operating efficiently, so you can maximize the number of customers you’ll serve and revenue you’ll bring in.

Be sure to touch on how you’ll manage inventory , work with parts suppliers, and ensure equipment maintenance protocols are being followed. Also, outline safety procedures and environmental compliance measures you’ll implement.

6. Business structure and management

This section describes the organizational structure and management of the auto repair shop. If you skipped the Company Summary and Funding Needs section, include information about your legal structure here.

Many owners choose to incorporate their business as Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) . This option strikes a balance between protecting the business from legal liabilities while providing flexibility in how they operate their business.

The management team section provides information about the auto repair shop’s key personnel. This includes the shop owner, managers, technicians and front office support.

Briefly explain their roles, responsibilities, qualifications, and experience.

7. Marketing and customer acquisition strategies

This section is where you’ll outline your strategies for attracting and retaining customers. You might want to offer loyalty programs for repeat customers, discounts for customers coming to your shop for the first time, or add-on services like a free car wash.

Cover the various marketing channels you’ll use, like local advertising or online marketing. Maybe you want to create a strong website and leverage social media. Or maybe you’ll rely more on partnerships with local businesses and participation in community events.

Focus on how you plan to build a strong reputation to attract and retain customers.

8. Financial planning and projections

Your financial plan should give detailed financial projections, including sales , expenses , and profitability . If you’re running an existing business, you can start with your previous year’s numbers. If you’re just starting out, put in your best guess.

Set a goal for yourself — maybe you want to grow revenue by 5 percent. Create a 12-month cash flow statement, income statement, and balance sheet that rises by 5 percent from the beginning of the year to the end.

Then, run your business.

As you compare your actuals to the forecast over time, you’ll see where you need to make strategic adjustments in order to reach your goal or if you need to revise your target.

It’s totally fine to adjust your forecast over time — forecasts are just guesses, after all.

Building a successful auto repair shop business plan: Key considerations

Understanding your target customer’s needs is crucial to writing an auto repair shop business plan that you can use effectively.

To ensure your business plan is the foundation of a growing operation, ask yourself whether you’re taking these considerations into account.

1. Service range

Vehicle owners have varied needs.

You should offer a broad spectrum of services that meet as many of the needs in your market as you can realistically provide, from basic maintenance to specialized repairs. Catering to more customer segments than your competitors is a good way to set your shop apart.

2. Pricing strategy

Competitive pricing is crucial. You want to attract customers with reasonable rates, while ensuring profitability by bringing in more revenue than expenses. Researching your competitors’ prices should help inform your pricing decisions.

3. Technician expertise

Skilled technicians are vital to your reputation and your bottom line. Make sure your technicians undergo regular training so that they’re up to date with the latest automotive trends and technologies.

Take some time to research technician wages in your area, to ensure you’re paying a competitive wage that will attract qualified employees.

4. Online presence

A strong digital footprint is essential.

Even if you plan to rely on traditional advertising and word-of-mouth sales, a website that is search engine optimized can help you generate good online reviews and attract customers in your area who are searching for auto repair services online.

If this isn’t an area of strength for you, consider hiring a website designer .

5. Shop environment

It may not make or break your business, but providing a welcoming environment at your shop signals to customers that you’re running a credible organization—a factor that might affect whether or not they return.

Focus on cleanliness, organization, and professional service.

Tim’s Timely Auto Repair Services

Industry analysis.

The United States auto repair market is valued at $78B with approximately 280,000 businesses in operation and over 614,000 employees working in the industry across the country. The auto repair industry has grown steadily over the past five years. Much of this growth can be attributed to more vehicles on the road combined with an increasing age of the vehicles in service. Additionally, rising disposable incomes have led to more people foregoing DIY repairs, and instead, taking their vehicles to industry operators when they need to be repaired.

One of the biggest challenges facing the auto repair industry is the growing shortage of technicians as many are retiring and there are not enough new technicians joining the field to fill the vacancies. Additional challenges include increased digitization and evolving technologies. Industry operators will need to keep up with the latest innovations to remain competitive.

The automotive repair industry is currently experiencing significant shifts due to advances in vehicle technology, evolving consumer expectations, and an increased focus on sustainability practices. With an estimated value of over $800 billion globally and a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 2% to 3%, the auto repair sector is integral to the maintenance of the world's growing automotive fleet, characterized by a mix of aging vehicles requiring extensive service and newer, more complex models that demand specialized technical expertise.

The target market for MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop encompasses a diverse demographic of vehicle owners within the Motorville region and its environs, which can be broken down into several key segments. Firstly, individual car owners representing various age groups, lifestyles, and socio-economic backgrounds form the bedrock of our customer base. This segment is growing steadily as car ownership increases and the average lifespan of vehicles extends due to better manufacturing standards. The second segment includes small businesses and organizations with vehicle fleets such as delivery companies, service providers, and governmental agencies, offering substantial repeat business opportunities. Overall, the population growth rate in Motorville is outpacing national averages, indicating rising demand for auto repair services.

Customers in our target market seek high-quality, reliable repair services that can be delivered in a timely fashion. They demand transparency in pricing, warranties that provide peace of mind, and personalized customer service that treats them as valued patrons rather than transactional clients. Equally important are convenient service hours, a modern and comfortable waiting area, and the availability of courtesy cars or shuttle services to minimize the disruption caused by vehicle downtime.

As for market trends, we see growth in consumer preference for service providers that can deliver comprehensive care, from routine maintenance to sophisticated electronic diagnostics and green disposal of waste and parts. Also, there is an increased propensity among millennials and Gen Z vehicle owners to opt for auto repair shops that demonstrate environmental responsibility and a digital presence, ranging from online booking to active social media interaction.

Competitor analysis reveals key players in the field, such as SpeedyFix Auto Center, Precision Auto Garage, and TopGear Car Services. SpeedyFix has carved out a significant market share due to its rapid service and large workforce; however, their rapid turnaround can sometimes compromise the personalized touch that is MotorCraft’s hallmark. Precision Auto Garage boasts meticulous workmanship and has established a loyal customer base through its focus on precision and high-end repairs, but they are positioned at a higher price point, which can deter cost-sensitive customers. TopGear Car Services is known for its tech-savvy approach, but struggles with customer service consistency and longer service times. MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop finds synergy in these attributes – we offer rapid and personalized services at competitive prices, backed by a robust technological infrastructure and a commitment to customer satisfaction.

Potential barriers to entry in the auto repair market include the high initial capital investment for state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and tools, skilled workforce acquisition and training costs, and the challenge of establishing a strong reputation in the face of established competitors. Additionally, ever-evolving automotive technology requires continuous investment in training and equipment updates to maintain service capabilities for newer vehicle models. Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations is also essential, creating another layer of operational complexity for new entrants. Despite these barriers, MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop has successfully navigated these challenges to establish itself as a trusted name in auto repair services in the region.

MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop's operations plan is fundamentally designed to ensure efficient and high-quality service delivery, with emphasis on customer satisfaction. To achieve this, our operational workflow encompasses structured daily activities, clearly defined processes, and vigilant quality control measures.

The daily operations commence with the opening of our service center at 8 AM, when our team of certified technicians and administrative staff begin their day. The operational workflow includes receiving vehicles, performing diagnostics and repairs, ordering parts, and communicating with customers. Appointments are pre-scheduled using our online system, which efficiently manages the allocation of tasks and resources. Walk-ins are accommodated with a systematic approach aimed at maintaining the workflow of already scheduled services. The day concludes with the closure of the shop at 6 PM, after which the staff perform a clean-up of the work areas and equipment checks to ensure readiness for the following day.

Our service delivery process starts with a thorough inspection and consultation to understand the customer's concerns and vehicle’s condition. Detailed estimates are then provided, and upon customer approval, our team undertakes the necessary repairs or maintenance using a checklist system to ensure completeness and accuracy. Technicians are equipped with tablets that detail the work order and provide access to service manuals and technical bulletins. At the completion of the service, vehicles undergo a quality control audit by our Lead Technician to certify the work meets MotorCraft's high standards.

Quality control at MotorCraft is paramount. It is interwoven with every facet of the service process. Our quality measures include regular calibration of diagnostic equipment, ongoing training for technicians on the latest automotive repair techniques, and strict adherence to manufacturer's guidelines and industry best practices. Each completed job is reviewed against a comprehensive checklist, and a final road test is conducted to ensure the repair meets performance expectations.

Inventory management is maintained via a computerized system that tracks parts usage and automatically alerts the Parts Manager when supplies are low. This system ensures critical inventory is always in stock, reducing vehicle downtime due to parts unavailability. We maintain a just-in-time inventory system, striking a balance between having necessary parts on hand and minimizing excess stock.

Supply chain management is strategic, relying on reputable suppliers with whom we have established long-term relationships. This ensures a steady supply of high-quality parts, often with negotiated volume discounts. MotorCraft's Parts Manager regularly reviews supplier performance, including delivery times, cost, and quality, to optimize our supply chain. We maintain contingency plans, with secondary suppliers in place to avoid service interruptions.

Our facilities and equipment needs are rigorously assessed and updated. MotorCraft operates in a well-maintained, modern garage equipped with multiple service bays to handle an array of vehicles simultaneously. We invest in top-tier equipment, including advanced diagnostics tools, lifts, and specialized repair instruments, which are serviced regularly to keep them in optimal condition. The facility is designed for efficiency, housing a well-organized inventory area, dedicated spaces for various repair tasks, and comfortable customer waiting areas with transparent views into the service bays.

In summary, MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop's operations plan encapsulates the seamless integration of high-quality service delivery, efficient workflows, and stringent quality controls. The Financial Projections section of the MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop business plan provides insights into the company's expected financial performance over the next three to five years. Based on market analysis, experienced management, and a sound operational strategy, the forecasted figures are provided with a conservative approach that reasons adjustments for potential market fluctuations and unexpected business impacts.

Sales Forecast: Year 1 anticipates revenues of $500,000, considering our conservative marketing approach and the time needed to establish our brand in the market. With growth strategies and customer satisfaction driving referrals, Year 2 is projected to see a 20% increase in sales to $600,000. Year 3 aims for a 25% increase to $750,000 as brand presence strengthens, and services expand. In Year 4, the projection is $900,000, a 20% increase, assuming maturing market share. Year 5 expects to break the $1 million revenue mark, reflecting the solidification of MotorCraft's market position.

Profit and Loss Projection: The first-year net profit margin is projected at 10% after accounting for direct costs of sales, including parts and labor, and fixed operating expenses like rent, utilities, and salaries. As efficiencies improve and the customer base grows, we expect Year 2 profits to increase to 13%, with a sustained uptick leading us to a 16% net profit margin by Year 5, due to reduced per-unit costs and increased pricing flexibility.

Cash Flow Projection: Cash flow is the lifeblood of our auto repair shop. Initial operations are supported by capital investments and business loans, with Year 1 expected to close with positive net cash flow after financing activities. Subsequent years should demonstrate improved net cash flow from operations due to higher revenue and better control of cash management, with positive end-of-year balances allowing for repayment of debt and potential reinvestment into the business.

Balance Sheet Projection: MotorCraft’s balance sheet will reflect gradual asset accumulation as reinvestments in equipment and facilities take place. Liabilities, primarily comprising the initial business loan, are scheduled for a structured paydown. Owner’s equity is expected to grow year over year, reflecting the ongoing profitability and fiscal health of the company.

Break-even Analysis: A break-even analysis shows that MotorCraft must generate approximately $300,000 in annual sales to cover fixed and variable costs. This translates to servicing an average of 750 vehicles a year, assuming an average transaction value of $400, a conservative estimate given the local market rates for repair services. This goal is achievable within the first year of operations based on our market assessment.

Financial Assumptions and Considerations: The financial projections are premised upon several critical assumptions. We anticipate a steady growth rate in our customer acquisition due to local demand and successful marketing initiatives. The pricing of services is assumed to slightly increase year over year due to inflation and increased labor costs. The projections also assume a stable supply chain without significant price volatility for parts and materials. Policies will be in place to manage accounts receivable efficiently, maintaining average collection days at 30 days or less to sustain good cash flow.

In conclusion, MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop’s financial projections demonstrate a solid business model capable of achieving sustainable profitability and growth within a competitive market. These projections are founded on a mix of practical experience, industry standards, and conservative financial practices, which will be revisited and adjusted annually to reflect actual operational results and market conditions.

auto repair shop financial plan

Auto repair shop financial plan

Successful operation of MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop hinges on accurately identifying potential risks and deploying effective strategies to mitigate and manage them. We have conducted a comprehensive risk analysis covering market-related, operational, financial, and legal aspects, and have established both mitigation strategies and contingency plans to address potential issues.

Identification of Potential Risks: Market risks include increased competition, changes in consumer behavior, and economic downturns that could reduce demand for auto repair services. Operationally, risks encompass technician recruitment and retention challenges, equipment failures, and supply chain disruptions that may prevent timely service delivery. Financial risks consist of cash flow problems, escalating costs of parts and materials, or unexpected expenses. From a legal standpoint, liability for workplace accidents or non-compliance with regulations presents a significant risk.

Risk Mitigation Strategies: To counter market risks, we plan to differentiate MotorCraft with high-quality, reliable service and a strong marketing campaign highlighting our unique selling propositions. We will closely monitor market trends to adapt our services to changing consumer needs and economic conditions.

Operationally, we aim to maintain a well-trained staff and a strong company culture to attract and retain top talent. Regular maintenance schedules and investing in high-quality, durable equipment will reduce the likelihood of operational breakdowns. Strategic relationships with multiple suppliers and maintaining critical inventory will alleviate supply chain risks.

Financially, we will implement strict budgeting and prudent financial management to protect our cash flow. Regular cost reviews will help us manage and anticipate any significant changes in part costs. Diversification of revenue streams, through fleet servicing contracts and tiered pricing strategies, will protect against fluctuations in individual consumer demand.

Contingency Plans: In the event of acute market contraction, MotorCraft will deploy an aggressive marketing plan and special promotions to retain market share. Should we encounter key staff turnover, our contingency plan includes cross-training existing employees and maintaining a network with local technical schools for quick talent sourcing.

If faced with a significant equipment breakdown, we have identified local equipment rental options to prevent service interruptions. Should a supply chain interruption occur, our contingency inventory and alternative supplier arrangements will maintain operational continuity.

If a financial cash crunch becomes evident, MotorCraft will prioritize fund allocation toward the most revenue-generating services and seek flexible payment terms with suppliers if needed. Lastly, establishing a business line of credit can provide an emergency buffer for unforeseen expenses.

Insurance and Legal Considerations: Insurance coverage is a critical component of our risk management strategy. MotorCraft maintains comprehensive general liability, property, and workers' compensation insurance policies to mitigate the financial impact of claims or accidents. For added protection, we also carry business interruption insurance to cover potential loss of income and extra expenses from unexpected events that halt our operations.

Legally, we ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations through regular audits and consultations with legal counsel. Environmental regulations are of particular concern in our industry, so we follow best practices for hazardous waste disposal and emissions. We also stay current with updates to labor laws to minimize the risk of employment disputes.

In essence, our risk analysis underscores a commitment to proactive and responsive management practices. Through careful planning, comprehensive insurance policies, and an agile approach to business operations, MotorCraft Auto Repair Shop is well-positioned to address risks and adapt to challenges that may arise.

What is an Auto Repair Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your auto repair business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Auto Repair Business

If you’re looking to start an auto repair business, or grow your existing auto repair business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your auto repair business in order to improve your chances of success. Your auto repair business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Auto Repair Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for an auto repair business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings is the other most common form of funding for an auto repair business.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

If you want to start an auto repair business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below are links to each section of your auto repair business plan template:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your mechanic shop business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of auto repair business you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have an auto repair business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of auto repair businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the auto repair industry. Discuss the type of auto repair business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of auto repair business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of auto repair businesses:

  • Auto Service Shop : this type of auto repair business focuses on routine servicing of cars and trucks, such as oil changes and tire rotation.
  • Transmission Repair Shop: this type of business focuses on maintenancing, diagnosing and repairing transmissions in all types of cars.
  • Body Repair Shop: this type of repair shop focuses on repairing damage to the body of a vehicle, primarily cosmetic damage due to collision.

In addition to explaining the type of auto repair business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of customers served, number of positive reviews, amount of monthly revenue, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the auto repair industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the auto repair industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your automotive business plan:

  • How big is the auto repair industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your auto repair business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your mechanic business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: car owners, truck owners, luxury vehicle owners, classic vehicle owners, and businesses that own vehicles such as car rentals, car dealers, delivery businesses, and repairmen.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of auto repair business you operate. Clearly, luxury vehicle owners would respond to different marketing promotions than truck owners, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most auto repair businesses primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other auto repair businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to choose from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes auto parts stores (for DIY repair). You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other auto repair businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be auto repairs located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of vehicles do they maintenance and repair, or what types of maintenance and repairs do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide better maintenance and repair services?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a car service business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of auto repair company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to auto repair, will you provide car rental services, repair financing or any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your auto repair company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your auto repair business located in a busy retail district, industrial area, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your auto repair marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your auto repair business, including speaking with vehicle owners in person or on the phone, maintenancing and repairing vehicles.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to repair your 50th car, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your auto repair business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your auto repair business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing auto repair businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing auto repair shops or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, how many cars will you repair per week? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your auto repair business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing an auto repair business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your shop location lease or descriptions of repairs you are working on.   Summary Putting together a business plan for your auto repair business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the auto repair industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful auto repair business.

Understanding the Market

Before diving into the process of creating a business plan for your car garage, it’s crucial to gain a thorough understanding of the market. Conducting a market analysis and identifying your target audience are key steps in setting the foundation for a successful car garage business.

Market Analysis

A comprehensive market analysis is essential to identify the current trends, opportunities, and challenges in the auto repair industry. By staying informed about the latest auto repair industry trends , you can position your car garage business strategically and adapt to the evolving needs of your target audience.

During the market analysis, consider factors such as the demand for auto repair services in your area, the level of competition, and the market share held by existing car garages. This research will help you understand the market landscape, identify gaps in the industry, and determine how you can differentiate your business.

Identifying Target Audience

Identifying your target audience is a critical aspect of building a successful car garage business. This involves defining the specific segment of the market that you aim to serve. Your target audience may include individuals, businesses, or a combination of both.

To identify your target audience, consider factors such as demographics (age, gender, income level), psychographics (lifestyle, preferences, values), and behavior patterns (frequency of car maintenance, type of vehicle ownership). This information will help you tailor your services and marketing strategies to effectively reach and serve your target audience.

Additionally, understanding the needs and pain points of your target audience will enable you to provide personalized solutions and exceptional customer experiences. By catering to the specific requirements of your target audience, you can differentiate your car garage business from competitors and build a loyal customer base.

Crafting Your Business Plan

Crafting a comprehensive business plan is essential when starting a car garage business. It provides a roadmap for your venture, outlining the steps you need to take to achieve success. In this section, we will explore two crucial components of a business plan: creating a business model and establishing goals and objectives.

Creating a Business Model

Creating a solid business model is the foundation of your car garage business plan. It involves identifying your target market, understanding your competition, and defining your unique value proposition. Consider the following elements when creating your business model:

Market Analysis: Conduct a thorough market analysis to understand the trends and dynamics of the auto repair industry. Identify the demand for car garage services in your area and analyze the competition. This information will help you determine the feasibility of your business and make informed decisions.

Identifying Target Audience: Define your target audience, which may include car owners in your local community, fleet operators, or specific vehicle owners (e.g., luxury cars or vintage vehicles). Understanding your target audience’s needs and preferences will allow you to tailor your services and marketing efforts accordingly.

Unique Value Proposition: Differentiate your car garage business by highlighting your unique value proposition. This could include specialized services, exceptional customer service, competitive pricing, or any other factor that sets you apart from competitors.

Establishing Goals and Objectives

Establishing clear goals and objectives is vital for the success of your car garage business. These goals will guide your decision-making process and help you stay focused on what you want to achieve. Consider the following when setting your goals and objectives:

Business Goals: Define specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for your car garage business. For example, you may aim to achieve a certain level of revenue, increase customer satisfaction ratings, expand your customer base, or open additional locations.

Financial Objectives: Set financial objectives to ensure the profitability and sustainability of your business. This may include establishing revenue targets, monitoring expenses, and implementing effective financial planning strategies.

Operational Objectives: Outline operational objectives related to the day-to-day management of your car garage business. This may involve optimizing workflow processes, ensuring efficient use of resources, and maintaining high-quality service standards.

Marketing Objectives: Develop marketing objectives to promote your car garage business and attract new customers. This could include implementing digital marketing strategies, building a strong brand identity, and forging partnerships with local businesses or car dealerships.

By creating a robust business model and establishing clear goals and objectives, you set a solid foundation for your car garage business. These elements will guide your decision-making process and enable you to adapt to changing market conditions while striving for long-term success.

Legal and Financial Considerations

When starting a car garage business, there are important legal and financial considerations that must be addressed. These aspects play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and long-term success of your business.

Registering Your Business

Before officially launching your car garage, it is essential to register your business with the appropriate authorities. This process varies depending on the location and jurisdiction in which you operate. Registering your business not only establishes it as a legal entity but also allows you to comply with local regulations and access certain benefits and protections.

To register your car garage business, you will typically need to:

  • Choose a business name: Select a unique and memorable name for your car garage that reflects your brand and services.
  • Determine the business structure: Decide on the legal structure for your business, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or limited liability company (LLC).
  • Obtain necessary permits and licenses: Research and obtain any required permits and licenses specific to the auto repair industry in your area. These may include a general business license, trade license, or environmental permits.
  • Register for taxes: Contact the appropriate tax authorities to register for federal, state, and local taxes. This includes obtaining an employer identification number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) if you plan to hire employees.

It is recommended to consult with a lawyer or business advisor who can guide you through the registration process and ensure compliance with all legal requirements. Budgeting and Financial Planning

Effective budgeting and financial planning are crucial for the success of your car garage business. Proper financial management allows you to track expenses, allocate resources, and make informed decisions. Here are key steps to consider:

  • Create a startup budget: Estimate the initial costs involved in setting up your car garage, including equipment purchases, lease or purchase of a facility, licensing fees, and marketing expenses. This budget will help you understand the financial requirements for getting your business off the ground.
  • Develop a cash flow projection: Forecast your expected cash flow for the first year of operation. Consider both income and expenses, including ongoing costs like rent, utilities, salaries, and inventory. This projection will provide insights into the financial health of your business and help you identify potential cash flow gaps.
  • Identify funding sources: Determine how you will finance your car garage business. This could include personal savings, loans from financial institutions, or investments from partners or investors. Explore opportunities for small business loans or grants that may be available for entrepreneurs in the auto repair industry.
  • Track and monitor finances: Implement a system for tracking your income and expenses. This can be done manually using spreadsheets or by using accounting software. Regularly review your financial statements to assess the profitability and financial stability of your car garage business.

By prioritizing legal compliance and implementing effective financial planning, you can establish a solid foundation for your car garage business. These considerations will not only ensure that you meet legal requirements but also help you make informed financial decisions that drive the long-term success of your venture.

Setting Up Your Garage

When starting a car garage business, setting up your physical location and acquiring the necessary equipment and tools are crucial steps to ensure the smooth operation of your business.

Choosing a Location

Selecting an ideal location for your car garage is essential for attracting customers and maximizing your business’s potential. Consider the following factors when choosing a location:

Accessibility: Choose a location that is easily accessible to your target market. Ideally, it should be situated near busy roads or in areas with high vehicle traffic.

Size and Layout: Evaluate the size of the location and ensure it can accommodate the number of vehicles you expect to service. Consider the layout to ensure efficient workflow and proper segregation of different areas, such as repair bays, storage, and customer waiting areas.

Zoning Regulations: Check local zoning regulations and ensure that the chosen location allows for the operation of a car garage business. Obtain any necessary permits or licenses to comply with local regulations.

Competitor Analysis: Research the presence of other car garages in the area. While competition can be healthy, consider choosing a location where you can differentiate your services or cater to an underserved market.

Remember, location plays a significant role in attracting customers and establishing your brand presence. For more information on starting a car garage business, refer to our article on how to start a car garage.

Equipment and Tools

Equipping your car garage with the right tools and equipment is crucial for providing quality service and ensuring customer satisfaction. Here are some essential items you will need:

Automotive Lifts: Depending on the size of your garage, investing in hydraulic lifts will enable your mechanics to work comfortably and safely on vehicles, especially when performing tasks such as inspections, repairs, and maintenance.

Diagnostic Equipment: To accurately diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle issues, invest in diagnostic tools and equipment such as scan tools, code readers, and multimeters. These instruments will help your mechanics identify problems efficiently, saving time and improving customer satisfaction.

Hand Tools: A comprehensive set of hand tools is essential for various tasks, including wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, and specialty tools. High-quality tools are not only more durable but also provide better performance and precision.

Air Compressor: An air compressor is valuable for powering pneumatic tools such as impact wrenches, air ratchets, and air hammers. It is essential for efficient and effective repairs.

Specialty Equipment: Depending on your focus and specialization, consider investing in specialty equipment such as tire changers, wheel balancers, brake lathes, and alignment machines. These tools will enhance your service offerings and attract customers seeking specialized services.

By carefully selecting the location of your car garage and acquiring the necessary equipment and tools, you can create an efficient and well-equipped workspace that meets the needs of your customers. Remember to stay updated with the latest industry trends and consider incorporating auto repair shop marketing strategies to attract new customers and retain existing ones.

Building Your Team

To create a successful car garage business, it’s crucial to have a skilled and reliable team of mechanics. Hiring the right mechanics and providing them with ongoing training and development opportunities are essential steps in building a team that can deliver exceptional service to your customers.

Hiring Skilled Mechanics

When hiring mechanics for your car garage, it’s important to prioritize skills and experience. Look for individuals who have a strong background in automotive repair and maintenance. Consider conducting practical assessments or skill tests to evaluate their proficiency in diagnosing and repairing various vehicle issues.

In addition to technical skills, pay attention to qualities such as reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure. Strong communication skills are also valuable as they will be interacting with customers, providing explanations, and discussing repair options.

To attract skilled mechanics, consider networking within the automotive industry, posting job listings on relevant job boards, and utilizing social media platforms. Offering competitive salaries and benefits packages can also help attract top talent. Remember to comply with legal requirements and regulations when hiring employees for your car garage business. For more information on legal considerations, refer to our article on car garage business requirements.

Training and Development

Investing in the training and development of your mechanics is crucial for staying up-to-date with the latest automotive technologies and industry trends. Providing ongoing training can help enhance their skills, improve efficiency, and ensure high-quality service for your customers.

Consider partnering with automotive manufacturers, suppliers, or training institutions that offer relevant courses and certifications. These programs can cover topics such as new vehicle technologies, diagnostic techniques, and specialized repair methods. Encourage your mechanics to attend industry conferences and workshops to stay informed about the latest advancements in automotive repair.

Regular performance evaluations and feedback sessions can help identify areas for improvement and set goals for professional development. By supporting your mechanics’ growth and providing opportunities for advancement within the company, you can foster loyalty and retain valuable talent.

Building a well-rounded and skilled team of mechanics is a critical aspect of running a successful car garage business. With experienced mechanics who continuously develop their skills, you can provide top-notch service to your customers, build a reputation for excellence, and differentiate your business from competitors in the auto repair industry. Marketing Your Garage

Once you have established your car garage business, it’s essential to invest in effective marketing strategies to reach your target audience and build a strong customer base. Here are two key aspects to focus on when marketing your garage: branding and advertising, and digital marketing strategies.

Branding and Advertising

Creating a strong brand identity is crucial for standing out in the competitive market. Your brand should reflect the values and quality of services your garage offers. Start by designing a compelling logo and choosing a color scheme that resonates with your target audience. Consistently apply your brand elements across all marketing materials, including signage, business cards, and advertisements.

When it comes to advertising, consider various channels to reach potential customers. Traditional methods such as print ads in local newspapers or magazines can be effective in targeting the local community. Additionally, consider sponsoring local events or partnering with other businesses in your area to increase your visibility.

Online directories and review websites, such as Google My Business and Yelp, are essential for customers to find and review your garage. Ensure your business information, contact details, and customer reviews are up to date on these platforms.

Digital Marketing Strategies

In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is vital for any business. Implementing digital marketing strategies can significantly boost your visibility and attract new customers. Here are some strategies to consider:

Website : Create a professional website that showcases your garage’s services, expertise, and contact information. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly, as many customers search for services on their smartphones. Include a clear call-to-action, such as a “Book Now” button, to encourage potential customers to take action.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) : Optimize your website with relevant keywords related to your services and location. This will help your website rank higher in search engine results and increase organic traffic. Consider hiring an SEO specialist or using online tools to improve your website’s visibility.

Social Media : Establish a presence on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Regularly post engaging content, such as car maintenance tips, before-and-after photos of repairs, and customer testimonials. Engage with your followers by responding to comments and messages promptly.

Email Marketing : Build an email list of customers and prospects who have shown interest in your services. Send regular newsletters with updates, special offers, and helpful automotive tips. Personalize your emails to make them more engaging and relevant to your recipients.

Online Advertising : Consider running paid online advertising campaigns, such as Google Ads or social media ads, to target specific demographics or geographical areas. These platforms allow you to set a budget and track the performance of your ads, ensuring you get the best return on investment.

Remember to regularly monitor and analyze the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. Adjust your strategies based on customer feedback, industry trends, and the success of different marketing channels. By investing in branding, advertising, and digital marketing, you can effectively promote your car garage business and attract a steady flow of customers.

6.0 Market Analysis

Over the coming years, operators in the Tire Dealers industry in Canada are set to benefit from improving economic conditions, particularly within several of the industry’s key commercial markets, as the Canadian economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

With expected growth in corporate profit over the five years to 2025, which will be coming off a relatively low base level, many companies are expected to expand or upgrade their existing vehicle fleets and generate significant demand for retailers of tires, repair services and miscellaneous vehicle parts and accessories. Moving forward, rising levels of disposable income are expected to bolster demand for industry services, as these trends are anticipated to enable a greater number of Canadian consumers to upgrade existing vehicles, causing the industry’s customer base to expand.

As a result of these factors, IBISWorld projects industry revenue will increase at an annualized rate of 3.0% to $5.5 billion over the five years to 2025.

Commercial markets are anticipated to expand as industrial production growth is expected to occur within the Canadian economy. Moreover, corporate profit in Canada is forecast to increase at an annualized rate of 8.3% over the five years to 2025, enabling many of the industry’s transportation and wholesaling clients to increase investments in their vehicle fleets.

To further strengthen demand from this segment, operators are expected to grow business relationships and secure long-term distribution contracts over the next five years. For example, national and regional repair garages are expected to work to gain a competitive edge against smaller shops by entering into long-term commercial relationships with tire dealers.

Given the essential role that cars, trucks and other vehicles play in everyday life, overall demand for vehicle support services is projected to expand over the next five years, in line with rising population figures and increased consumer spending.

In turn, these positive trends are expected to support demand for industry operators. Industry profit is also expected to increase marginally over the next five years, as the profit margin is expected to recover from a low level in 2020.  At the same time, rising levels of disposable income are anticipated to encourage many consumers to purchase tires and repair services from external car dealerships or mechanics.

6.1 Market Trends

  • Amid COVID-19, industry profit is expected to temporarily decline
  • Despite high competition, revenue has expanded over the past five years
  • New vehicle sales are expected to grow from a low base level in 2020
  • The industry will likely benefit from consistent growth in the Canadian population
  • Small-scale operators are expected to continue entering the tire-dealer market
  • Industry profit will likely decline as operators seek to gain market share by offering discounts on products and services

6.2 Competitive Advantage

The following list outlines the three competitive advantages that will differentiate Your Canadian Auto Shop Saskatoon from the competition:

  • We are uniquely equipped to utilize the sales from all other stores to give us substantial buying power in obtaining our products cheaper from suppliers; subsequently, allowing for more affordable and competitive pricing for customers.
  • Through our agreement with Driver Capital No Credit Financing, we are able to appeal to a vast customer base by eliminating insufficient credit as a barrier to purchase.
  • We will be the only dealer in Saskatoon offering the extremely popular brand, Armed Wheels.

6.3 Risk Analysis

Total vehicle-kilometres.

Tires most often degrade from extended use and age. As a result, the more a vehicle is driven, the more often replacement tires or retreads will be required. The number of total vehicle-kilometres was expected to increase in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people have reduced nonessential travel and have commuted less by car, leading to an expected decline in the number of total vehicle-kilometres driven, which poses a potential threat to the industry.

World price of crude oil

High gasoline prices, which are dictated by crude oil price trends, generally decrease vehicle sales and cause consumers to switch to alternative modes of transportation. For instance, consumers may use public transportation when gasoline prices are high instead of driving their own vehicles and incurring the expense of gasoline. As a result, when consumers use their cars less, they will not require tires as quickly, thus decreasing industry demand.

Per capita disposable income

Per capita disposable income influences the timing and value of tire purchases. Consumers with more disposable income are quicker to replace worn tires and are more likely to purchase expensive, high-performance tires. Alternatively, consumers with less disposable income may be hesitant to purchase expensive products or to replace worn tires.

New vehicle sales

New vehicles are sold with a set of factory-installed tires. Increases in vehicles sold boost industry revenue for the long term as it increases the base of potential vehicles that need replacement tires. In the short term, new cars typically do not need replacement tires. When consumers buy new vehicles over maintaining their current ones, industry revenue is negatively affected. As of its last update, new vehicle sales were expected to increase in 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, consumers are expected to purchase fewer new vehicles, which represents a potential opportunity for the industry. 3

If you are interested in opening your own car repair shop, now is a great time because the market for mechanics is currently experiencing significant profit gains. Most drivers now have cars that are at least 10 years old, which means that the need for an auto mechanic is growing for more consumers. [1] X Research source Starting your own car repair shop can give you control over your own hours and allow you to reap the benefits of owning your own business.

Opening Your Store

Step 1 Obtain a license to operate your business.

  • Fill out an application . Your motor vehicle department can provide you with an application to apply for your license.
  • Meet eligibility requirements . In most states, you will need to meet certain eligibility requirements to be allowed to apply. These requirements may include things like your age, credit, and criminal record.
  • Provide required documents and information . You may need to include some other documents and information such as proof that the building you plan to use has been zoned for your business, your tax ID number, and color photographs of your facility.
  • Pay any fees required to process the application . The application fee may be as low as $20, but if approved, you may need to pay $300 or more to obtain the license. [2] X Research source [3] X Research source

Step 2 Purchase insurance for your business.

  • Check with your state's motor vehicle department to determine how much insurance you will need to obtain for your business.

Step 3 Fulfill your administrative needs.

  • Consider hiring an accountant or a financial advisor to help you establish a budget for your expenses as a new business. An accountant can help you manage your taxes, your payroll system, and advise you on the best bookkeeping system to use in your business.
  • You should also consider retaining a lawyer in case you face any suits or claims from your clients. Ask other mechanics in your area which lawyers they use and like.

Step 4 Implement a marketing strategy.

  • Define your core values as a brand . What are three words your customers should think of when they think of your business? You might think of words like "honest,""loyal," and "dependable." [7] X Research source
  • Print eye-catching flyers . You can place them in places where lots of customers might congregate, such as gyms, civic centers, office parks, and the parking lots at universities and college campuses.
  • Establish a loyalty program . You might offer your customers a free oil change after they come to see you for another service (like an engine repair or heating/air conditioning repair). You can also send coupons in the mail to your neighbors or consider offering a digital discount through a service like Groupon. [8] X Research source
  • Consider advertising on TV or on the radio. TV commercials and radio ads may also help you to reach a wider audience and gain new customers.

Step 5 Make alliances with car dealerships.

Designing a Business Plan

Step 1 Define the scope of your business.

  • Will you only offer a specialized service, such as oil changes and tire repairs, or will you offer a more comprehensive range of repairs?
  • Will you buy a currently operating car repair shop or start a brand new one from scratch? What are the costs and benefits of each of these options?
  • Do you plan to remain an independent repair shop or will you join a franchise like Jiffy Lube or Midas? You will generally need $30,000-$200,000 to join a franchise, but the advantage is that they will handle marketing and they often have a nationally trusted brand name for potential customers. If you do not have any existing customers in your current career that you know would follow you to a new business, joining a franchise might be worth the investment.

Step 2 Describe potential locations.

  • Look for locations that are convenient to either highway or main road access. If your shop is very isolated, it is unlikely customers will come to you, especially when towing costs are often tallied by the mile.
  • Your location should also be able to accommodate an office for you to take care of your administrative needs and a waiting room area for your customers.

Step 3 Determine your equipment needs.

  • You should clearly detail any loans your plan to apply for in order to fund your business? Will you apply for a business loan from your bank, from the Small Business Administration, or from another source? To get approved, you must have a healthy financial history (with good credit, no history of bankruptcy) and be able to demonstrate that you have roughly 70% of the funding already raised. [10] X Research source
  • If you are denied a loan from the Small Business Administration or your local bank, then you could consider other lenders like OnDeck and Kabbage if you need cash quickly. These lenders are meant for short-term loans because their interest rates are very high. [11] X Research source
  • If you choose to take a loan from friends or family members, still put the repayment terms of this loan in writing. You do not want to risk losing relationships in the event that you cannot repay the loan in a timely manner.

Step 5 Define your Unique Selling Point.

  • You can also consider if you will specialize in a niche field, like restoring old cars, or providing environmentally friendly or "green" services to your customers. [12] X Research source
  • Defining your USP will help lay the foundation for your broader marketing plan once you open your store.

Expanding Your Business

Step 1 Consider going mobile.

  • Technicians must have a two-year degree and a year of formal experience working as an automotive technician (or mechanic).
  • You can become certified in a number of specializations, ranging from school bus repair, collision repair, trucking equipment, and more.

Jason Shackelford

  • You should only do this if you get to the point where your first branch runs smoothly on a daily basis. Make sure you have reliable and capable managers to help you. If you still have to run daily demands by yourself, then it might not be the best time to expand.

How To Start Your Own Garage Business

car garage business plan

Every business or entrepreneurial venture requires a lot of prior research and dedication in order to become successful and in order to start a garage business, one would require good planning as well as execution. Most graduates from technical institutes end up joining as an employee in an auto repair garage . It is from here that they hone their skills and finally end up starting a garage business of their own. Some people who are focused and business-minded start a garage business straight away just after their stint at technical institutes. If you research anywhere or ask someone about how to start a garage, most of your research would reveal that contrary to the general notion about a garage business, it is not just about fixing cars merely but a lot more than that. Not only do you need the right mechanics and machinery for running operations but would also have to take a keen interest in the domains of advertising, accounting, marketing and many allied areas in order to run it successfully. Since the garage business is capital intensive, it has to be planned to minimize the costs properly in the initial days and spend consciously. The start-up costs should be minimal. Some businesses also purchase an existing auto repair shop equipped with all necessary infrastructure and also manage to engage some of the customers living in the vicinity.

While there is no magical way for a garage business to be successful, here are some of the things a first-time entrepreneur should keep in mind before starting his/her own garage business. Here are they as follows-

1. Market Potential Analysis and Business plan

Every business needs to conduct some checks to understand the market potential and then accordingly come up with a business plan with the insights. The entire process can be broken down into the following steps-

Collection of data:  A series of data needs to be collected before starting any garage business In order to understand the size of the market and the number of customers the garage will cater to. Customer surveys can be done to understand the customer pain points and needs. Based on the data obtained, the garage business can decide on the location where to open the shop and the costs

Competitor analysis : It is essential to study the competitors in the area and accordingly plan on the services and prices. Competitor analysis is a great way to understand the strengths and weaknesses. It helps in understanding customers better and offers more unique services to them.

Customer segmentation and target : Knowing the customers properly is the first step in establishing any successful business. The customers vary in terms of preferences and income levels. Services catering to the target consumers can accordingly be planned to belong to different segments of the population.

Proper estimation of costs and revenue: A proper forecast of costs and revenue can help in increasing the chances of the business doing better. The business can accordingly use its resources and then go ahead with the forecasts.

Suppose we want to find out the estimated average revenue that would be generated from each vehicle visit. We can use the potential sales figures and assume the average revenue/vehicle visit at INR 1000. This would actually show revenue of  30 Lakhs in a year. Then the next step is to estimate the operating expense to see that the garage business can make a profit or not. Some of the costs that need to be considered are Employee cost, Material cost, Marketing expense, and depreciation

Feasibility checks like this are extremely important as they reduce risks and the chances of losses occurring.

2. finalizing the space for the garage business.

The next step in the process of opening a garage business is to find a location for the property. The location of the garage business is extremely important and should be located either along the highways or in the middle of the city where a high volume of traffic would be expected.

Once we select the location we need to conduct the market survey to capture the number of vehicles in operation available in the area where we want to set up the garage. Let us assume that there are 30,000 vehicles available in that area and each one needs at least one visit in a year then we have the potential of 30,000 visits to any of the garages. So if we target a 10 % Market share from these potential visits, then we can get 3000 vehicle visits to our garage /year which means 250 vehicles/month and 25 vehicles in a day. A proper estimation can assist in better planning and hence serving customers better.

In some countries, it is mandatory to obtain a license for opening businesses like gas stations and auto body repair shops and the costs for such licenses are huge. In order to therefore go ahead with the plans, businesses need to make some bank loans. In order to obtain this loan from the bank, they should strategize a business plan that clearly outlines the business goals, advertising costs, and other miscellaneous expenses.

3. Special and niche services

Every business stands out from its competitors through the unique customer service and niche services it provides. On the same lines, new auto garage businesses should research the market and start services which the other auto body shops in the area do not provide. Niche services can include specialized repairs and services like repainting, collision repair, or some detailed repair. Trends in the automobile market are changing every day and new cars in the segments like eco-friendly cars, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are emerging every day. It makes sense for garage businesses to start investing in new-age technology equipped to provide niche services. They should also hire mechanics who are aware of new cutting-edge technology and skills which could assist in the efforts of the auto garage to carve out a niche for itself. More customers would be attracted to visit the garage business if it has niche services that other competitors do not provide. This would translate into better revenues.

4. Hiring the right employees

Employees drive a business and finding the right set of employees is actually an arduous task that takes a considerable amount of time. The auto mechanic colleges are the best places to find out newly trained employees for garage businesses. It is essential to balance out the number of experienced and new employees in order to derive the best for the business. Many garage businesses work in an apprentice system while hiring new mechanics. It is a paid position that can last from one to four years. It is expected that an employee would work in the garage after his/her apprentice stint is over. Hiring apprentices can help in developing long-term and meaningful working relationships which can be beneficial if you open your own auto repair shop. The experienced employees provide stability while the new ones bring freshness and updated skill sets. Encourage the employees to clear certifications in order to make the business look more authentic. Employees with diverse skill sets and decent communication skills should be preferred. Garage businesses should also eventually plan for training.

5. Effective marketing and promotions for the business

The better and more effective the marketing campaigns are, the better are the prospects of more customers visiting the garage business. People looking for answers on how to start a garage should prepare a well-researched marketing plan. Special care should be taken to fulfill all the promises that have been made in the advertisements. A garage business should ideally have its own website and social media accounts on platforms like Facebook and Instagram where it should advertise its services. Offering guarantees to customers in the advertisements is another way to attract the attention of customers. Such services can include free repairs within a certain period of time and other related services. A business can also put up videos of how mechanics work in the garage and the practices that are followed in the workplace. Garage businesses can also put up an ethics statement that may outline the rules followed to satisfy customers, its conformance with the laws and policies. Efforts should be taken to portray a clean and transparent image to the customers. Free car maintenance workshops and repair clinics can be organized for those in need and this can actually spread good word of mouth for the business.

6. Invest in customer service

In order to start a garage business, the first thing any entrepreneur should keep in mind is to properly understand customers and accordingly serve them. Not understanding customer pain points and preferences at the right time can actually lead to a number of issues that cannot be rectified later despite best efforts. Garage businesses can probably have a waiting room for their customers when their vehicles are being serviced. The list of available services along with their rates can be posted here on a board in the waiting room.

7. Document a fool proof business plan and plan financing

It is necessary to document a foolproof and effective business plan on how the business would function, the cash flow, the plans for expansion in the future, and other industry-related information. To secure funds to start a garage business, businesses can either go to a bank or apply for loans with a local lender. They should opt for minimum funds to secure a location, tools, and working capital enough to sail through till the revenue starts coming in. Used cars which customers discard and are in good condition, can be refurbished and then can be put up for resell. This will ensure another mode of revenue generation which will be great for a new business.

8. Chart relationships with dealers and other organisations.

Another key element to start a garage business is to enter into partnerships or long-term relationships with tool dealers. These dealers visit garages to exchange tools and offer new products. They can be good agents of referral and can actually bring in new customers through word-of-mouth publicity. A garage business can also apply for becoming an official vehicle inspection station of the government’s Public Safety and Motor Vehicles department. This may not be a great way to generate profits but can actually bring more credibility to the business leading to more customers coming in for repairs.

8. Operations Management

Monitoring the key business performance indicators regularly is essential once the business has started its operations in full swing. Some of the KPI factors that can be considered for this process can be the satisfaction level of customers, the number of customers visiting, revenues generated and the expenses incurred. Involving all stakeholders in the organization in this process can aid in corrective actions to be taken for sustaining and improving these KPIs. Future expansion plans and adding more services can only be considered once the present KPIs are consistent and matching expectations.

Before opening the garage, the business owners should first look at the aspects stated above and then carefully look into the steps of executing the plan. Like everything, it would need meticulous planning, a good amount of research in industry trends and competitors. The garage business would also require innovative modes of marketing on traditional and social media. Some basics aspects of creating good customer service and ensuring feedback come in properly will also need to be ensured while planning to open a garage. The right employees need to be hired with the right skill sets and they need to train well in order to interact with customers. Some plans look great on paper, but it is hard work that ensures the proper execution of such plans on the ground. A business may not see the huge flow of revenue almost immediately and may take some time to reach maturity. Gosplan Garage

car garage business plan

The Gosplan Garage is a building that serves as a garage and repair shop for vehicles, located on the outskirts of the capital city of the Russian Federation, Moscow.

1 Gosplan Garage

The garage got its name from the State Planning Committee that was responsible for the central economic planing of the Soviet Union, which was most commonly known as Gosplan. The responsible architect who designed this Soviet avant-garde marvel that borders the line of futurism, is none other bu Konstantin Melnikov, which actually is the last realized project during his career.

2 Gosplan Garage

Built between 1932 and 1934 at Aviamotornaya Street, although some sources say that it was finished in 1936, it is a significant Soviet monument that speaks about the historic past when the architects were bold enough to use futurism, splashed more with Soviet style architecture.

3 Gosplan Garage

The garage building has only one floor, which is adjacent to another building that has three floors, and the main feature is the flute-like looking frontal façade that has a big window that allows the daylight to enter the interior and be of a bigger help to the workers inside, without the need for additional lightning.

4 Gosplan Garage

The specially designed curves of the “pipe” look like they have been added like layers to get the shape they have for the moment. Nonetheless, being one of the most impressive works of Melnikov, in 1990 the garage was included on the list of objects of cultural heritage, and additionally in 1997 was assigned the list of Historic Monuments, which allowed the building to be privatized.

7 Gosplan Garage

There was a fire in 2014 that destroyed the interior of the garage, however, the exterior was almost intact, and as it is featured in many tours around Moscow, nowadays the garage gets a lot of audience as people are coming to see one of the masterpieces Melnikov did.

Gosplan Garage

The Gosplan garage is located on the outskirts of Moscow and is the last realised project by Konstantin Melnikov. The architectural structure and style of this garage is closer to futurism than to the those of avant-garde and constructivism.

The centre of the one-storey garage is formed by a circular feature that faces the street. The building still functions as a garage and repair shop.

MoSCoW Prioritization

What is moscow prioritization.

MoSCoW prioritization, also known as the MoSCoW method or MoSCoW analysis, is a popular prioritization technique for managing requirements.

The acronym MoSCoW represents four categories of initiatives: must-have, should-have, could-have, and won’t-have, or will not have right now. Some companies also use the “W” in MoSCoW to mean “wish.”

What is the History of the MoSCoW Method?

Software development expert Dai Clegg created the MoSCoW method while working at Oracle. He designed the framework to help his team prioritize tasks during development work on product releases.

You can find a detailed account of using MoSCoW prioritization in the Dynamic System Development Method (DSDM) handbook . But because MoSCoW can prioritize tasks within any time-boxed project, teams have adapted the method for a broad range of uses.

How Does MoSCoW Prioritization Work?

Before running a MoSCoW analysis, a few things need to happen. First, key stakeholders and the product team need to get aligned on objectives and prioritization factors. Then, all participants must agree on which initiatives to prioritize.

At this point, your team should also discuss how they will settle any disagreements in prioritization. If you can establish how to resolve disputes before they come up, you can help prevent those disagreements from holding up progress.

Finally, you’ll also want to reach a consensus on what percentage of resources you’d like to allocate to each category.

With the groundwork complete, you may begin determining which category is most appropriate for each initiative. But, first, let’s further break down each category in the MoSCoW method.

Start prioritizing your roadmap

Moscow prioritization categories.

Moscow

1. Must-have initiatives

As the name suggests, this category consists of initiatives that are “musts” for your team. They represent non-negotiable needs for the project, product, or release in question. For example, if you’re releasing a healthcare application, a must-have initiative may be security functionalities that help maintain compliance.

The “must-have” category requires the team to complete a mandatory task. If you’re unsure about whether something belongs in this category, ask yourself the following.

moscow-initiatives

If the product won’t work without an initiative, or the release becomes useless without it, the initiative is most likely a “must-have.”

2. Should-have initiatives

Should-have initiatives are just a step below must-haves. They are essential to the product, project, or release, but they are not vital. If left out, the product or project still functions. However, the initiatives may add significant value.

“Should-have” initiatives are different from “must-have” initiatives in that they can get scheduled for a future release without impacting the current one. For example, performance improvements, minor bug fixes, or new functionality may be “should-have” initiatives. Without them, the product still works.

3. Could-have initiatives

Another way of describing “could-have” initiatives is nice-to-haves. “Could-have” initiatives are not necessary to the core function of the product. However, compared with “should-have” initiatives, they have a much smaller impact on the outcome if left out.

So, initiatives placed in the “could-have” category are often the first to be deprioritized if a project in the “should-have” or “must-have” category ends up larger than expected.

4. Will not have (this time)

One benefit of the MoSCoW method is that it places several initiatives in the “will-not-have” category. The category can manage expectations about what the team will not include in a specific release (or another timeframe you’re prioritizing).

Placing initiatives in the “will-not-have” category is one way to help prevent scope creep . If initiatives are in this category, the team knows they are not a priority for this specific time frame.

Some initiatives in the “will-not-have” group will be prioritized in the future, while others are not likely to happen. Some teams decide to differentiate between those by creating a subcategory within this group.

How Can Development Teams Use MoSCoW?

Although Dai Clegg developed the approach to help prioritize tasks around his team’s limited time, the MoSCoW method also works when a development team faces limitations other than time. For example:

Prioritize based on budgetary constraints.

What if a development team’s limiting factor is not a deadline but a tight budget imposed by the company? Working with the product managers, the team can use MoSCoW first to decide on the initiatives that represent must-haves and the should-haves. Then, using the development department’s budget as the guide, the team can figure out which items they can complete.

Prioritize based on the team’s skillsets.

A cross-functional product team might also find itself constrained by the experience and expertise of its developers. If the product roadmap calls for functionality the team does not have the skills to build, this limiting factor will play into scoring those items in their MoSCoW analysis.

Prioritize based on competing needs at the company.

Cross-functional teams can also find themselves constrained by other company priorities. The team wants to make progress on a new product release, but the executive staff has created tight deadlines for further releases in the same timeframe. In this case, the team can use MoSCoW to determine which aspects of their desired release represent must-haves and temporarily backlog everything else.

What Are the Drawbacks of MoSCoW Prioritization?

Although many product and development teams have prioritized MoSCoW, the approach has potential pitfalls. Here are a few examples.

1. An inconsistent scoring process can lead to tasks placed in the wrong categories.

One common criticism against MoSCoW is that it does not include an objective methodology for ranking initiatives against each other. Your team will need to bring this methodology to your analysis. The MoSCoW approach works only to ensure that your team applies a consistent scoring system for all initiatives.

Pro tip: One proven method is weighted scoring, where your team measures each initiative on your backlog against a standard set of cost and benefit criteria. You can use the weighted scoring approach in ProductPlan’s roadmap app .

2. Not including all relevant stakeholders can lead to items placed in the wrong categories.

To know which of your team’s initiatives represent must-haves for your product and which are merely should-haves, you will need as much context as possible.

For example, you might need someone from your sales team to let you know how important (or unimportant) prospective buyers view a proposed new feature.

One pitfall of the MoSCoW method is that you could make poor decisions about where to slot each initiative unless your team receives input from all relevant stakeholders.

3. Team bias for (or against) initiatives can undermine MoSCoW’s effectiveness.

Because MoSCoW does not include an objective scoring method, your team members can fall victim to their own opinions about certain initiatives.

One risk of using MoSCoW prioritization is that a team can mistakenly think MoSCoW itself represents an objective way of measuring the items on their list. They discuss an initiative, agree that it is a “should have,” and move on to the next.

But your team will also need an objective and consistent framework for ranking all initiatives. That is the only way to minimize your team’s biases in favor of items or against them.

When Do You Use the MoSCoW Method for Prioritization?

MoSCoW prioritization is effective for teams that want to include representatives from the whole organization in their process. You can capture a broader perspective by involving participants from various functional departments.

Another reason you may want to use MoSCoW prioritization is it allows your team to determine how much effort goes into each category. Therefore, you can ensure you’re delivering a good variety of initiatives in each release.

What Are Best Practices for Using MoSCoW Prioritization?

If you’re considering giving MoSCoW prioritization a try, here are a few steps to keep in mind. Incorporating these into your process will help your team gain more value from the MoSCoW method.

1. Choose an objective ranking or scoring system.

Remember, MoSCoW helps your team group items into the appropriate buckets—from must-have items down to your longer-term wish list. But MoSCoW itself doesn’t help you determine which item belongs in which category.

You will need a separate ranking methodology. You can choose from many, such as:

  • Weighted scoring
  • Value vs. complexity
  • Buy-a-feature
  • Opportunity scoring

For help finding the best scoring methodology for your team, check out ProductPlan’s article: 7 strategies to choose the best features for your product .

2. Seek input from all key stakeholders.

To make sure you’re placing each initiative into the right bucket—must-have, should-have, could-have, or won’t-have—your team needs context.

At the beginning of your MoSCoW method, your team should consider which stakeholders can provide valuable context and insights. Sales? Customer success? The executive staff? Product managers in another area of your business? Include them in your initiative scoring process if you think they can help you see opportunities or threats your team might miss.

3. Share your MoSCoW process across your organization.

MoSCoW gives your team a tangible way to show your organization prioritizing initiatives for your products or projects.

The method can help you build company-wide consensus for your work, or at least help you show stakeholders why you made the decisions you did.

Communicating your team’s prioritization strategy also helps you set expectations across the business. When they see your methodology for choosing one initiative over another, stakeholders in other departments will understand that your team has thought through and weighed all decisions you’ve made.

If any stakeholders have an issue with one of your decisions, they will understand that they can’t simply complain—they’ll need to present you with evidence to alter your course of action.
