Field experiment was conducted on acidic soil of Hagereselam, southern Ethiopiain 2019 cropping season to evaluate the growth and yield component formation performance of barley genotypes under different inorganic fertilizer types. Treatment consisting of four fertilizer types (control, NP, NPS and NPSB) and four barley genotypes (217176b, 240478, 234911b and 208855b) and one barley variety (HB-1307) as a check laid out using a Randomized Complete Block Design with factorial arrangement with three replications Both main and interaction effects influenced days to physiological maturity, plant height, number of effective tillers m-2. However, days to heading, spike length, number of grain per spike and1000 grain weight, were only affected by main effects. Barley Genotype 217176b with NPSB fertilizer exhibited the longest plant height and better performance with regard to the remaining measured parameters. However, it did not significantly differ for the same parameters from the same genotype under NP and genotype 240478 with NPSB fertilizer application. The lowest performances were recorded from genotype 208855b with no fertilizer application. Given the fact that the performance of growth, phenology and yield components between the two genotypes in combinations either with NPSB or NP is not statistically significant, either of the two genotypes with the NPSB or NP fertilizer is very essential for appropriate production of barley under acidic soils of Hagereselam and acidic soils of similar agro-ecologies in the highlands of Ethiopia.

this book contains basic concepts of experimental design and analyses of different designs in SAS. it starts with comparative experiment and extends the concept to the classical one way ANOVA's such as CRR, RCBD,LATIN SQUARE (The replicated and un-replicated), the lattice and alpha lattice design and incomplete block design; the two way ANOVA's that done in factorial experiment (the replicated and un replicated). the analyses in these design are demonstrated using SAS.

Conservation agriculture is claimed to be one of the solutions for the problems of poor agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan countries. The impact of conservation agriculture depends on environmental factors such as slope, vegetation, soil type, rain fall pattern and intended crops. This study was conducted from 2013 to 2014 with the objective of assessing the impact of conservation agriculture practices on soil chemical properties. Five main treatments were selected for the study: Monocropping (maize) without crop residue, Monocropping (maize) with crop residue, Crop rotation (maize and haricot bean) with crop residue, Intercropping (Haricot bean with maize) with crop residue and a grazing land as a control. A Randomized complete block design with four replications was used. A total of 40 composite soil samples (4 replication * 5 treatments * 2 soil depth) were collected and analysed for selected soil chemical properties. Results showed that soils in the study area were moderat...

ABSTRACT Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a major grain legume grown and consumed in sub Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. It is the most important food legume, fodder and cover crop. However, its cultivation in Assosa constrained mainly by low soil fertility and lack of improved agronomic practices. A field experiment was conducted during 2018 main cropping season at Assosa, Western Ethiopia with the objective of investigating growth, symbiotic and yield performance of three Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varieties in response to Rhizobium inoculation and Phosphorus application. The treatments studied includes three P levels (0, 15 and 30 kg P ha-1), two inoculation levels (un-inoculated and inoculated with Rhizobium strain; HB-429) and three common bean varieties (local, Hawassa Dume and Nasir) in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement using three replications. The results revealed that Rhizobium inoculation with strain HB-429 Inoculation with strain HB-429 significantly (P<0.01) increased nodule number, nodule dry weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, leaf area index, pod number plant-1, seed number pod-1, hundred seed weight, grain yield, above ground total biomass and harvest index as compared with the control. The application of P at 30 and 15 kg ha-1 significantly increased all the measured parameters except branch number. The effect of varieties was also significant for most of studied parameters. Among the varaities Hawassa dume out performed for most nodulation, growth and yield parameters as compared to Nasir and local varieties. The interaction effect of strain x P, strain x varieties and P x varieties caused significant variation on number of nodule; plant height, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, leaf area index, seed number pod-1,above ground total biomass and grain yield. These, the use of Hawassa dume variety with Rhizobium strain HB-429 inoculation significantly gave the highest grain yield (2.9 ton ha-1) followed by the interaction of Rhizobium strain HB-429 inoculation with the supply of 30 kg P ha-1(2.8 ton ha-1). Grain yield was positively and significantly correlated with most of growth parameters, yield and yield components except plant height. From the economic point of view the partial budget analysis of the study treatments reviled that the highest net return (27734.3ETB ha-1) was gained from Hawassa dume variety with the combined application of 15 kg P ha-1 and Rhizobium strain HB-429 inoculation. Thus, it could be recommended that the use of Hawassa dume variety with the combined application of 15 kg P ha-1 and Rhizobium leguminasarum phasioli strain HB-429 to get higher yield and profit of this crop at Assosa, Western Ethiopia. However, verification of the result on farmers fields across season and areas could be required before wide use of this study to put the recommendation in firm ground. Keywords: Hawassa dume, local, Nasir, Nitrogen, Nodule, Rhizobia, Strain HB-429.

The March–April, 2015 edition of Agronomy Journal contains 11 articles that provide practical background information and advice for statistical concepts and procedures that our scientists often need to use in their research. In 10 of these articles, the authors provided software code that supports analyses discussed in their articles. That same code is provided here in this document to help others properly analyze their data. Most of the code uses SAS, although some authors provided code in GenStat or R in addition to or instead of SAS.
