Apple’s AirPods have grown into a significant business for the company, with 114 million sold by 2020. A commodity that many saw as an expensive accessory has become common, with nearly every phone maker selling their own ‘hearable’ to compete with Apple. Apple was ahead of the pack in Q2 of 2022, holding 27.8% of the total market share. Samsung and Xiaomi followed up with 9.3% and 5.3% respectively.

Further, Apple released AirPod Max, Bluetooth over-ear headphones, in Dec 2020 with a price tag of $549. While Analysts estimated that AirPod Max won’t boost Apple sales because of a niche market, some expect that it could boost AirPod sales because of Apple’s Goldilocks strategy.

Cybart forecasts that Apple’s wearables segment will generate $30 billion in revenue by 2021, including the Watch, AirPods, and select Beats headphones.

The five reasons why Apple built a strong wearables business are mentioned below:

  • Early adopter: One of Apple’s guiding principles is to make technology more personal, and it began investing in wearables, including its silicon processors, in the early 2010s.
  • Other corporations gambled on voice: Because few Large Tech businesses had Apple’s hardware competence, they bet big on voice (example: Amazon’s Echo) as the future computing paradigm. It appeared to be a bad gamble.
  • Design expertise: People must desire to wear wearables, which requires design skills. Apple has a track record (and aptitude) for designing devices that consumers want to show off as much for its aesthetic as it does for its computational capabilities.

Apple Silicon (Chipsets, Processors)

Apple announced that it would switch from Intel chipsets to its own Apple Silicon processors based on ARM in 2020. In keeping with this, the business released a new M1 processor as well as three products powered by it — the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini. A survey from market analysis firm TrendForce suggested that M1-powered Mac machines represented around 0.8% of overall laptop sales in 2020, months after the products became available for purchase.

In 2020, Apple is anticipated to launch the first MacBook to utilize its silicon processor rather than Intel’s, allowing all its key product lines to run on the same architecture.

When considering Apple’s most notable purchases, two stand out:

  • In 1997, NeXT Software was purchased for $404 million. The acquisition of Steve Jobs’ post-Apple venture, which featured the forerunner to iOS, returned Jobs to the firm he created.
  • Beats for $3 billion in 2014: Apple’s largest acquisition was Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s headphone firm, which laid the framework for Apple Music.

Dongles link headphones to charging connections, computers to TVs or card readers, etc. Dongles are a major business nowadays since it’s difficult to conduct many routine computer chores without them. This is owing, in large part, to Apple, which, in 2016, eliminated the headphone jack from the iPhone range and shifted nearly completely to USB-C connectors on its Macs. The newest iPhone isn’t the only Apple gadget that requires an array of dongles to function properly.

More crucially, the iPod was compatible with iTunes, Apple’s jukebox software for the Mac, making it simple for users to transfer music from CDs to their iPods. Apple, too, capitalized on the iPhone’s popularity in 2010 by releasing the iPad, a tablet computer built on the same software. 

Operating Systems

Both Mac OS X and iOS originated from Darwin, an older Apple operating system based on BSD UNIX. iOS is a proprietary mobile operating system owned by Apple that can only be loaded on Apple devices. 

Apple’s iOS is a closed ecosystem, which implies that Apple creates both the operating system and the hardware, and no other corporation utilizes either of them to integrate with their services. The Mac OS was released in 1984 to power Apple’s Macintosh series of personal computers (PCs). The Macintosh heralded the age of graphical user interface (GUI) systems, inspiring Microsoft Corporation to create its own GUI, the Windows operating system.  

The interface is the most noticeable variation between Windows and Mac operating systems. macOS is perceived to be more basic, streamlined, and elegant, but Windows is considered to be more sophisticated and feature-rich, with more customization choices. 

The design styles for Mac and PC are vastly different. Microsoft Windows has a 77.74% market share for desktop operating systems (OS) as of July 2020. Apple’s macOS has grown in popularity over the years but is still a minor player in the desktop OS industry. Linux, the third most popular desktop operating system, has a tiny but constant market share. As of May 2021, OS X had a market share of 15.87% , while Windows had a market share of 73.54%, and Linux had a market share of 2.38%.

The WatchOS app experience differs from app experiences on other platforms in several ways. For example, because the Apple Watch is meant to be worn, the UI is tailored to wearers and provides a lightweight, responsive, and highly personalized experience.   • Emotient (Jan 2016)

Emotient, a San Diego business developing artificial intelligence technology that scans facial expressions to determine emotions, was bought by Apple. Apple did not specify the details of the acquisition in the report.

  • Flyby Media (Jan 2016)

Apple acquired Flyby Media, an augmented reality business that created technology that lets mobile phones “see” the world around them. Apple has been interested in virtual reality for several years. The purchase occurred shortly after Apple announced the hiring of a prominent AR/VR specialist, Doug Bowman. Apple may have been working on technology that will someday find its way to the iPhone, similar to Google’s Project Tango, which delivers computer vision to mobile devices.

  • Gliimpse (August 2016)

Gliimpse, a health data firm, was purchased by Apple for around $200 million. Gliimpse allowed users to import their medical information into a single virtual environment. In December 2011, Apple went under an acquisition with Anobit Technologies , an Israeli semiconductor startup. The deal was completed at approximately $500 million. The main two reasons for which this acquisition was made include the flash memory controllers of Anobit made a key component of all Apple’s leading products (from iPads and iPhones to MacBook Airs) and finally the acquisition added a large team of chip engineers to payroll. Flash memory has been a crucial piece of Apple’s technology puzzle.  

Acquisition of Texture

In March 2018, Apple acquired Texture , a digital magazine service by Next Issue Media LLC. The deal was done for $485 million, and it provided subscribers with unrestricted access to their favorite titles with a single monthly subscription fee.

Acquisition of Shazam

On September 24, 2018, Apple acquired Shazam to have more opportunities to explore and experience music. The deal was finalized at $400 million.

In May 2018, Apple revealed that Apple Music had reached 50 million users.  

Acquisition of Next Software

Back in 1996, Apple had acquired Next Software at a deal of $400 million. Apple paid approximately $350 million in cash and stock for the privately held Next to purchase that company’s shares and an additional $50 million to cover its debts. 

Since its technology was agile, Apple hoped that Next’s object-oriented, Java-enabled open software platform would greatly boost its Internet and intranet status. It also aimed to capitalize on Next’s enterprise role.

Acquisition of PrimeSense

In 2013, Apple acquired PrimeSense , an Israeli-based pioneer in 3D sensor technology. The deal was completed at approximately $360 million. PrimeSense’s system could potentially be used in a variety of Cupertino devices. This acquisition was Apple’s second purchase of an Israeli company, as it bought Anobit in January 2012. Apple did not disclose the intentions behind the purchase of PrimeSense.   

Acquisition of AuthenTec

In 2012, Apple bought AuthenTec , a fingerprint sensor technology developer for approximately $356 million. The fingerprint technology, used in mobile phones in Japan for authentication of mobile payments, would help Apple bring those services to markets such as the United States. 

Apple had also acquired the right to pay the company to license certain patents totaling as much as $115 million. AuthenTec’s authentication features would be integrated into Apple’s iPads, iPhones, and potentially as security measures for other features, such as non-mobile computer systems or cloud-based networks or services.  

Acquisition of PA Semi

In 2008, Apple acquired PA Semi , a chip designer for approximately $278 million. This acquisition was a strategic move by Apple, as it aimed to continue to differentiate its next-generation handheld products amongst a growing fleet of competitors. Even the power savings offered by P.A. Semi’s designs may have been amongst the firm’s most compelling assets in Apple’s eyes.

This agreement marks the beginning of a strategic engagement with Apple, which will open up a plethora of new prospects for UnitedMasters artists.

The Volley’s funders’ ultimate goal is to spare students from spending too much time “processing” material and redirect their time and energy on meaningful learning. 
  • On November 21, 2015, Apple invested in God-i , a startup that specialized in wearable devices in the seed round. But afterward, Apple exited from further investments in God-i.  
  • On February 25, 2019, Apple along with other investors invested an amount of $21 million in FreightWaves during a Series B funding. FreightWaves is a data and content forum that delivers near-real-time statistics to industry players.

Users would be able to download these official apps from their respective app stores. 
  • In October 2017, Apple and GE launched a collaboration to deliver powerful industrial applications that would provide predictive data and analytics from Predix, GE’s industrial Internet of Things (IoT) platform, to iPhone and iPad. The corporations announced the release of a new Predix software development kit (SDK) for iOS, which would provide developers with the tools they require to build their own powerful industrial IoT apps.

The collaboration would improve in the integration of Apple’s machine learning framework, Core ML, with IBM Watson, resulting in strong insights that become deeper with time and use. The alliance would include exclusive IBM cloud services optimized for iOS, such as device management, security, analytics, and mobile integration.  
  • In 2013, Square partnered with Apple to offer the new Square Stand, a point-of-sale system through Apple’s extensive retail network. The Square Stand is an iPad accessory with the capacity to connect to a variety of devices including cash registers, barcode scanners, and printers. In addition, the gadget has a built-in credit card reader. In 2016, the company announced a new collaboration that would allow consumers to connect money saved on Square’s virtual card, Square Cash, to their Apple Wallet.  

Future Outlook

Apple has been doing more than good for a long time and say since the company launched the iPhone. 

For the 10th consecutive year, Forbes magazine ranked Apple as the most valuable brand in the world in 2020. Apple’s great track record should continue as long as future management takes care of the brand and pushes it into new sectors. Apple’s breakthroughs are often incremental, with the company adapting its design prowess to the most recent consumer tech trends.

Looking ahead ten years, the Apple of 2030 should continue to progressively enhance its hardware products while also introducing new ones such as Apple automobiles, AR/VR headsets, AR smart glasses, and so on. Apple will also broaden its brand to provide a suite of packaged consumer offerings.

In 2020, Apple executed an AR-related acquisition, acquiring NEXTVR for around $100 million, considering the future growth and vast applications of AR and how Apple can take advantage of it. 

“When I think about that in different fields, whether it’s health, whether it’s education, whether it’s gaming, whether it’s retail, I’m already seeing AR take off in some of these areas with the use of the phone,” said Tim Cook on a podcast . “And I think the promise is even greater in the future.”  

Aside from possible smart eyewear, Apple is said to be working on self-driving automobiles. Besides these new, futuristic initiatives, Apple is projected to continue selling a large number of iPhones, Apple Watches, iPad tablets, laptops, and desktops even ten years from now. By 2030, it’s feasible that Apple will have a version of almost every form of entertainment, financial, or other consumer service.

Apple announced an acceleration of its US investments, with plans to make additional contributions totaling more than $430 billion and create 20,000 new jobs throughout the country over the next five years, beginning in April 2021. Apple has increased its investment by 20% over the next five years, boosting American innovation and delivering economic benefits in every state. Tens of billions of dollars will be invested in next-generation semiconductor research and 5G innovation throughout nine US states.

  • In this scenario, iPhone revenue will be moderately higher at the end of the 10 years than in 2021.
  • By 2031, the Mac will grow only by 5%, the iPad by 8%, Wearables, Home and Accessories by 20%, and Services by 15%. One new product introduction, Product X, will generate $10 billion in revenue by 2031.

Over 10 years, sales growth is 9.66%, a reasonable rate for a company of this size. The iPhone growth narrative is far from done, and a couple more upgrade cycles may drive a revival in growth over the following two decades. Even if App Store fees are reduced to 0%, Apple’s management will find another way to monetize service offerings.

The largest Apple product to ever exist is not its technology but rather an architectural monument: “The Apple Park”, designed by Norman Foster and Partners and completed in 2017. It is the largest office building in the world and is the company’s second campus built in Cupertino, California , constructed on a 175-acre land with a 2.8 million square foot main building with four stories, housing 12,000 employees on a daily basis.

The apple Park places people at its heart, creating an ideal workspace for continued creativity, innovation, and well-being. The campus is built in true Californian spirit, open, and connected to nature. Built with deep care towards the environment as well as the company and its staff, the campus is powered by 100% renewable energy. It is the largest LEED Platinum-certified office building in North America.

Built on a 175-acre site with an impervious surface, the site now has increased the green spaces from 20 to 80%, with over 6 kilometers of walking and jogging trails. There are now 9,000 trees on-site, including the indigenous oaks and orchards as well as the meadows, sports fields, terraces and a secluded pond.

Structure | Apple Park

The structure of the main building is an infinite loop specially designed keeping in mind Steve Job’s vision for the new Apple Headquarters. It is a massive spaceship Campus called “The Ring “, with a radius of 761 feet and a width of approximately 180 feet across. The structure is surrounded by grass and trees and has an orchard in the centre of the ring, and is the largest pre-cast concrete framed office building with a curved glass facade and glass canopy. The structure innovatively integrates long-span prestressed concrete elements with exposed honed architectural surfaces, liquid radiant cooling systems, forced return air plenums, as well as pre-plumed fire sprinklers.

The glass façade :  The most important architectural feature of the office space is the floor-to-ceiling glass partitions with no visible metal trim from top to bottom, which necessitated the soffits being the same size as the office so the glass could recess above the ceiling line. The continuous slab recessing from the grid to the grid is an unlikely candidate.

The entire campus of Apple Park is a collaboration of the ring building, Steve Jobs theatre, Fitness, and Wellness Centre , Visitors center, and south parking, encompassed by flowing parkland, the structure sits low amid tall trees and is a great place to socialize, exercise and work.

The Simple form of the ring building conceals immense expertise and innovation, comprising of a few core elements present in office space: the communal pod spaces for collaboration, private office spaces for concentrated work, and broad, glazed perimeter walkways featuring the largest sheet of curved glass surface ever constructed building and uninterrupted connection with the landscape surrounding the building. The ring form is grouped in 9 radial wings separated by 7 entrances and the cafeteria/ restaurant wing itself, which occupies the north-east axis: it is a quadruple height dining hall experience with outdoor terraces separated through sliding glass doors with 50 feet height, biggest ever constructed and encourages interaction among the users.

The fitness and wellness centre is the pavilion retreat in the apple park landscape approached from the south; it appears as a single-story, lightweight building with expensive glazing that opens light-filled exercise and treatment rooms onto the parkland. Between its two volumes, a juice bar serves healthy drinks and snacks around the courtyards shaded by olive trees. 

The apple park visitor center is an exclusive gateway to apple Park with an extensive roof terrace and stunning views of the main building that offers a unique glimpse of apple park nestles within the carefully planted olive grove, the visitor center is transparent form sitting below a floating carbon-fiber roof which cantilevers over the outdoor seating areas on either side. According to the head of the studio of Foster+Partners : Stefan Behling : “ the idea was to create a delicate pavilion where visitors can enjoy the same material palette and meticulous detailing seen in the ring building in a relaxed setting against the backdrop of apple park .”

Special apple merchandise is available at the visitor center as souvenirs with a café at the southern end opening onto the landscape of apple park where the visitors can relax and repose.

Pre-stressed Concrete

Another key challenge was created by the seismic demands of the project, while the building base is isolated with tiny horizontal accelerations, the vertical accelerations imposed by the performance requirement were significant, hence the building required designing code above the requirements to a performance level of minimum damage in a 2,500 years period, leading to the development of pre-stressed concrete long span unit with a bottom flange.

Sustainability Factor | Apple Park

The Apple campus is built on Apple’s commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability, hence using 100% renewable energy throughout the building, emphasizing the on-site generation of energy from photovoltaic and fuel cells. The building structure is based on providing net-zero energy throughout by a climate responsive design, a comprehensive multi-modal transportation plan, and compact land use that reduces building and parking footprint and the heat island effect with a plan reminiscent of the natural California landscape, including the use of native and drought-tolerant vegetation. The environmental sustainability feature is designed to provide a net zero increase in greenhouse gas emissions, minimize natural resource consumption, and improve the air, water, light, and micro-climate quality of the site.

We encourage everyone across our supply chain to share feedback. And we’re focused on ways to amplify their voices. We interview and survey hundreds of thousands of supplier employees, and provide hotlines so they can anonymously raise concerns directly to Apple. We use this feedback to support our suppliers in strengthening their operations and providing the best possible experience for their employees.

We investigate reported concerns quickly, with Apple experts typically arriving onsite within 24 to 48 hours. Apple has zero tolerance for retaliation, and any supplier found to have retaliated against an employee for raising a concern faces immediate consequences, up to and including termination of their business with Apple. We require our suppliers to promptly address any issues, and we regularly check on their progress until we confirm that all necessary actions have been taken.

If suppliers are unwilling or unable to correct any issues, they risk removal from our supply chain. Since 2009, we have removed 25 manufacturing supplier facilities and 231 smelters, refiners, and manufacturers of materials from our supply chain for failing to meet our standards.

We hold suppliers accountable for our strict standards through regular, rigorous onsite assessments. Conducted by independent third-party auditors, these assessments look at every detail of a supplier’s operations through worker and management interviews, detailed site walkthroughs, and thorough reviews of documentation.

Suppliers must fix any violation of our standards under the supervision of Apple experts and take steps to prevent the issues from happening again. Any suppliers that are unable or unwilling to improve their operations to meet our requirements risk removal from our supply chain.

That’s why we’re always reviewing and strengthening our machine safety programs to help keep the people who operate manufacturing equipment safe on the job. We require suppliers to design safer equipment from the start and to conduct regular trainings on topics such as the use of safety devices, inspection basics, automation safety, and hazards associated with moving parts. We also require suppliers to regularly inspect equipment and safety procedures to confirm that machines remain in safe working condition and that the rules put in place to keep people safe are being enforced and followed. If we do find issues, we work with suppliers to correct them and prevent them from happening again.

Apple’s worldwide corporate operations have been carbon neutral since 2020, and we’ve set a goal to become carbon neutral across our entire supply chain, including the lifetime use of our products, by 2030.

Reaching our Apple 2030 goal means we first need to continue reducing the carbon emissions from our manufacturing processes. To make this happen, we’re designing our products to be less carbon-intensive, increasing our use of recycled and renewable materials, and transitioning our entire supply chain to 100 percent renewable energy. We’ll then use carbon removal to address the small amount of remaining emissions, starting with high-quality nature-based solutions, like those in Apple’s Restore Fund.

We’ve also called on our suppliers to decarbonize their Apple production by 2030, and we’re helping them get there through targeted programs and training that aim to improve their energy efficiency and identify sources of high-quality renewable energy.

Today, all established final assembly sites for major Apple products are Zero Waste Certified.

Water is a critical resource shared by people and ecosystems around the world, and we’re working to protect it for future generations. Through our Clean Water Program, we’re helping suppliers reduce their water usage, promote water recycling, and prevent water pollution. Since the launch of this program in 2015, 20 of our suppliers’ facilities have achieved certification through the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), the world’s leading water stewardship organization. Earning this certification requires suppliers to adopt industry-leading water conservation and stewardship practices while also engaging with their community to protect resources across their local water basin.

We maintain strict standards for the responsible sourcing of materials — whether primary or recycled. It is also a strategic management approach that enables Apple Inc. to maximize its leading edge against competitors. Through the company culture, employees are motivated and expected to keep business information within the technology business organization. This cultural trait is reinforced through Apple’s organizational structure (business structure) and related policies, rules, and employment contracts that prohibit the disclosure of information, such as technological breakthroughs in the company’s consumer electronics. In this context, Apple’s work culture helps protect the business from corporate espionage and the negative effects of employee poaching.

Moderate Combativeness . Apple’s company culture has moderate combativeness. This feature is linked to Steve Jobs and his combative approach to leadership. He was known to randomly challenge employees to ensure that they have what it takes to work at Apple. Today, under Tim Cook’s leadership, the company has been changing its corporate culture to a more sociable and a less combative one. Nonetheless, combativeness remains a major influence in the technology business. Apple’s business culture exhibits a moderate degree of combativeness that presents challenges that motivate employees to enhance their output.

Apple’s Organizational Culture: Advantages, Disadvantages, Recommendations

Advantages and Benefits . The combination of top-notch excellence, creativity, and innovation in Apple’s organizational culture supports the company’s industry leadership. The business is widely regarded as a leader in terms of innovation and product design, especially in consumer electronics. These cultural characteristics empower Apple and its human resources to stand out and stay ahead of competitors. This company culture enables success and competitive advantages, as well as the further strengthening of the company’s brand, which is one of the key business strengths shown in the SWOT analysis of Apple Inc . Creativity and excellence are especially important in the company’s rapid innovation processes for continuous competitiveness and business development despite aggressive competition with Samsung and other firms.

Drawbacks and Weaknesses . Apple’s corporate culture brings challenges because of the emphasis on secrecy and the moderate degree of combativeness. An atmosphere of secrecy can limit rapport among workers, while moderate combativeness has the potential to limit or reduce employees’ morale. These cultural issues can reduce business effectiveness and increase employee turnover. Apple Inc. can address this situation by modifying its organizational culture to reduce combativeness, but not necessarily remove it. This recommendation focuses on reducing the disadvantages of combativeness, without eliminating the benefits of combative approaches in the technology company’s operations. Also, Apple can integrate new cultural traits to keep the business relevant, given trends and changes in the information technology, cloud services, digital content distribution, and consumer electronics industries’ environment.

Apple’s latest patent application paints an interesting picture of how the company is thinking about future devices, which could be influenced by recent Right To Repair legislation .

The patent application (via Patently Apple) hints at a future device with a removable back panel, which can be swapped in and out for panels with one or more additional hardware features.

The additional components range from the rear housing acting as a protective case to adding in supplemental batteries, health monitoring devices and even a second display.

The patent even details one example of a rear panel that includes an additional camera module. This would all be connected via a spring clip system, as the patent explains in typically verbose language.

“The spring coupling element may be conductively coupled to the housing structure and may be configured to both mechanically and electrically couple to attachment features.” In short, the back plates should be easily swappable via some kind of spring release.

When I first saw this, I immediately thought of the LG G5—the first modular phone. The G5 had a removable battery that popped out of the bottom of the device, via a spring clip system and took the phone’s chin with it.

That meant other modules could be swapped in, like a bigger battery, an additional camera, a DAC and even a VR component. Sound familiar? LG’s go at a modular phone was very much a product of its time.

Before the G5, Google had long played with the same idea via its Project Ara handset—a modular phone designed to reduce electrical waste. The company shelved the device in 2016, but clearly, the idea hasn’t died yet.

A modular iPhone seems extremely far-fetched for a company like Apple, which likes to innovate slowly and surely. Patents are notoriously unreliable indicators of future devices, too. With that said, Apple has been edging toward making its phones easier to repair thanks to some not-to-gentle pushes from legislators.

Apple redesigned the internal chassis architecture of the iPhone 15 to make it easier to remove the back panel, and therefore simpler to repair. The patent suggests an easier version of this. In previous years the company also created a self-repair kit for people who want to fix their devices at home.

Apple has also partially walked back its parts pairing policy and will make it easier for users to swap hardware, and calibrate those components, in the iPhone 16.

In April it said that “select” iPhone models will now benefit “from the full functionality and security afforded by the original factory calibration, just like new genuine Apple parts.”

Previously Apple had required replacement hardware in an iPhone to be both made by Apple and calibrated by the company to work properly . The change in stance was at least in part because of an aggressive Right To Repair bill passed by the Oregon legislature .

Apple’s softening of its stance on who can tinker with its devices, and redesigning iPhones to make it easier to swap out parts, means this patent application might not be a complete fairy tale.
