As a marketer, my professional bio is the best way to, well, market myself.
From generalist to content strategist and agency to enterprise, my role has changed a lot over the last (almost) eight years. And my professional bio has to keep up. Even though I can admit I don’t always feel like rewriting it.
But we all know we have to keep our professional bios refreshed to give people an accurate snapshot of who we are, why they should work with us, and why they should care about what we have to say.
For that reason alone (and because it’s my actual job), I’m here to share some of my favorite professional bio examples along with some tips from years of reworking my own.

A professional bio or biography is a quick rundown of your background and experience. Your bio should include details about your professional expertise, skills, and achievements, but it’s also an opportunity to show off your personality and personal interests.
Professional bios can live just about anywhere — your personal or company website, speaker or contributor pages, LinkedIn profile , or other social media channels.

Purpose of Professional Bios
“Writing a professional bio is more than just listing academic degrees or job titles — it's a strategic narrative about your professional journey,” says Rosario Maccarrone , Director & Head of Student Services at OPIT.
When I look at my own professional bio, I want it to answer four simple questions:
- Who is she?
- What has she done?
- What does she do?
- What can she do?
I want someone to read it and think: “Wow, that was a great summary. I’d love to know more.”
Your professional bio is your opportunity to briefly introduce yourself (or your brand) and to tell clients, customers, employers, and colleagues what you’re good at.
It’s not a laundry list of everything you’ve ever accomplished — you have a resume for that. The keyword here is snapshot . You want the reader to quickly identify what your areas of expertise, talents, and interests are.
They can then use that snapshot to decide if they want to move forward and make a connection.
Example: Alana Chinn is a marketer of all trades, with over seven years of experience in brand management and communications. As an MBA, her expertise in business strategy shines through every aspect of her work.
3. Talk briefly about your work history and current position.
Next up, talk a little bit about your career. Whether you've authored a novel or work as a mid-level specialist, use this space to describe what you’ve done and what you do now.
At the bare minimum for this section, I’d recommend mentioning any previous (but relevant) roles followed by your current position. Once you’ve reeled them in with your kick-a** intro, this is an easy way to establish your credibility early on.
Example: She spent many of her early career years working as a strategy consultant across marketing and PR agencies. Since then, Alana has taken her talents to HubSpot where she exercises her captivating creativity and sharp editorial mind as Marketing Blog Editor.
4. Show off your skills and a professional accomplishment (or two).
Your professional bio is just the place to tout your successes and share what makes you great.
Rongala says, “I always talk about the skills or successes that make me stand out in my field. Focusing on your unique strengths is important, whether it's a skill set, an award, or a project that made a big difference. This not only builds trust — it also draws attention to what makes you special.”
Why do you do what you do? And what do you care about most as a professional?
From your commitment to innovation or dedication to ethical decision-making, explain what drives you — and be enthusiastic about it.
Example: Alana meets readers where they are with compelling messages that inspire career growth and spark great content ideas. Inclusivity is a must, and she actively finds opportunities in her writing to give marginalized voices a safe place to shine.
6. Share your passions and interests outside of work.
Transition from describing your values in work to defining who you are outside of work.
Rongala says, “Adding a skill or interest outside of work makes the bio more personal and easy to relate to. You can show that you're more than just your job title by telling them about yourself in this way.”
The name of the game here is humanization — especially in this everything-is-written-by-AI era. If I’m reading about you from a computer screen, that already creates distance.
Try to close that gap by sharing a few nuggets from a more personal perspective.
Example: Based in the D.C. area, you’ll find Alana playing with her adorable French Bulldog (Howie), trying out new bagel recipes, or watching Friday Night Lights on repeat.
Sure, frenchies, bagels, and FNL have very little to do with my day job. But imagine the instant connection if another frenchie owner / bagel lover / FNL fan is reading it, amirite?
7. Tell your readers what you want them to do next.
You’ve grabbed someone’s attention and even gotten them to read your professional bio in its entirety. What’s next?
That’s up to you. What action do you want the reader to take after they learn a little bit about who you are and what you do?
Maybe you want them to read through your portfolio. Or reach out about a potential collaboration or work opportunity.
Include a clear call to action so you can keep the conversation going.

8. Tap AI for inspiration and a second pair of “eyes.”
Ah, AI. Should you use it to create your bio? Here’s my take. (And I promise I won’t be a biased blogger here.)
I say go for it, but I’d recommend leveraging AI for three specific use cases: outline inspiration, spelling and grammar checks, and tone adjustments.
HubSpot’s Free AI Content Writer is great for this. Tools like ChatGPT can also be useful here.
Here are a few prompts I’ve used for my bio before (that you can, too).
Outline inspiration: Outline a professional bio for a marketer with seven years of experience in marketing, content strategy, and communications. Include writing, organization, and attention to detail as key skills.

So don’t be afraid to tell a joke or use some of your favorite casual phrases. I’m officially giving you permission to go a little rogue with it.

Plus, having both a short and long bio is a nice touch.
Best for you if: You’re an expert in your niche, and you’re regularly called on for speaking engagements.

Like on Twitter, Instagram bios can be a challenge to write because the platform limits the number of characters that can be used. How do you write a short business bio that adequately interests readers? Author Rebecca Bollwitt expanded the ideas she could communicate in her brief Instagram bio by infusing emojis into her statements, each expressing ideas in a single character.

Professional Bio Template
You don’t need to be a skilled writer to create an effective professional bio. Most business bios, even most of the best examples, follow a certain formula. The following can serve as a template for writing your own professional bio:
(NAME) is a (JOB TITLE) at (COMPANY NAME), where (NAME) (VERB – include an action verb that describes what you do) (NOUN – include a noun that describes what you produce) for the past (NUMBER) years, including (TASK1), (TASK2) and (TASK3).
(NAME) has (ACCOMPLISHMENT1) and (ACCOMPLISHMENT2), among other industry distinctions. (NAME) can help you meet your target goals in the (INDUSTRY TYPE) industry. (NAME) currently resides in (PLACE), where (s)he enjoys (HOBBY) and (INTEREST).
Short Bio Examples
Many platforms require professionals to provide concise bios that adhere to a character limit. Some individuals choose to write shorter bios to effectively convey their message to readers. The following business bio examples will assist you in crafting your own brief professional summary.

Professional bios are an important component of a company website. Who represents your organization? In her business bio for Columbia University, anthropology professor Audra Simpson clearly communicates her professional biography and research interests.

An effective business bio doesn’t have to come from a template. In fact, if you’re skilled at creative writing, you can grab a reader’s attention and impress potential clients with a creative business bio on your company page or various social media platforms. The following creative business bio examples can serve as a guide.
An effective bio can come in a variety of forms. On his website, DJ Nexus dedicates an entire page to the story of his career. The New England-based DJ doesn’t just list professional details, however, he also provides enough personal information to tell readers who he is.
Pei Jung Ho
You might expect a unique and creative professional bio from an artist, and Pei Jung Ho definitely meets that expectation. The professional designer doesn’t simply boast a website with some accomplishments and job descriptions. Ho’s personal website opens with an animated statement in colorful and bold lettering before transitioning to a more traditional short bio and an engaging photo of the artist.

Should I write a bio in the third person?
A professional bio can be written in first person or in third person. Professional and more formal bios are often written in third person, while personal and more casual bios typically use first person.
It’s vital, however, that the chosen tense is consistent throughout the bio. For example, if the bio starts off in third person, referencing the subject by name and using pronouns such as “he,” “she” and “they,” then it’s important to continue using third person throughout the entire entry.
If, however, you start your bio by referencing yourself as, “I,” or using first person, then that should remain consistent, as well.

Business Owner Bio Examples to Get People Interested in You
If you have a website, are on any social media platforms, or just need a short blurb about yourself to include in articles — what you choose to put in your bio can make or break whether or not people choose to do business with you. And if you do it right, your bio could actually have people reaching out to you to talk business. Here are some tips and business owner bio examples to help expand your reach and show people what they want to see.
Instead of thinking about your bio as a general “About Me” paragraph, try to get more targeted than that.
In an ideal world, what is it that you’d want to happen from people reading your bio?
If you’re a business owner (or even a business professional of any kind), you probably want people to read your bio and then contact you because they’re interested in working with you.
How do you get someone interested in working with you?
You put information in your bio that would make someone understand what’s in it for them.
So, instead of taking the “About Me” approach, you find a way to talk about you, your services, and what you do by showing what you have done for other people!
For example, I could write my bio in one of two ways: About me or about you .
About me: “Co-owner of Inspired Idiots social media marketing agency. I specialize in copywriting, blog writing, and project management.”
Me me me me me. Easy to read, easy to forget.
About you : “Social media marketing consultant, Inspired Idiots. I help people stop wasting time on social media and double their investment back by actually turning digital marketing into sales.”
I give one short sentence about the brand I represent, and then I talk about what you will get from working with me. I poke at the pain point that a lot of our clients deal with — they’re on social media, but they don’t know why they’re not getting customers from it — and then I tell them how I solve that pain point.
It’s about me, but it’s really about you and what I can do for you. Let’s look at some more examples.
Business Owner Bio Examples
Mark Levy , big-leagues business owner, follows this exact strategy in his bio. One sentence about what he does, followed by what, specifically, he could do for you. Now, when it comes to first-person (“I am…”) vs third-person (“Mark is…”) I’m a firm believe in using the first-person voice.
Because it creates more of a connection between you and the reader , which is what you’re ultimately trying to do. Sure, the third-person voice (like the example above and below) creates a sense of authority, as if someone else wrote the bio about you and is therefore saying all these prestigious things — but you’re trying to attract people who want to talk with YOU, want to potentially work with YOU, and want to know what value YOU can bring them. That human-to-human voice is better achieved with first-person language.
Russell Brunson could be called the king of digital marketing — so it’s no surprise that his bio hits all the right notes. Here’s what I’ve done, here’s how well I’ve done it, and here’s what I continue to offer.
If you’ve seen this Alex Hormozi’s videos online (if not, where have you been?) then you’ll know it’s somewhat difficult to argue with anything he says. His points are always so logically sound that he could basically outsmart anyone. So, when he writes a bio, and you’re an aspiring business owner, it’s a good idea to take notes. This guy knows what he’s doing.
Jamie Kern Lima took three years of nos and turned it into a billion dollar company. As the founder of It Cosmetics and one of Forbes’ top self-made women , Lima knows a thing or two about getting people to do business with her. Her bio follows the same general structure:
- What she’s accomplished.
- What her “thing” is.
- What she wants YOU to do.
