"This handbook comprehensively explores approaches for delivering market insights for fact-based decision-making in a market-oriented firm. Divided into four parts, it addresses: (1) the different nuances of delivering insights, (2) quantitative, qualitative, and online data gathering techniques, (3) basic and advanced data analysis methods, and (4) the substantial marketing issues that clients are interested in receiving through marketing research. It is a valuable resource for all studetns and instructors of marketing research."

"Grover and Vriens have blended the contributions of 48 well-qualified academics and professionals to produce a comprehensive, in-depth guide to modern market research. A unique feature of this work is its emphasis on the potential of market research as a generator of marketing insights, this positioning market research as a trusted adviser. This handbook can serve as an up-to-date reference for market research suppliers as well as a guide for users. Highly Recommended."

" In addition to discussing relevant content, the various contributors to the book are excellent communicators. Sentences are clear, paragraphs are coherent, and chapters fulfill the promise of their introductions, and readers will benefit from the diagrams, figures, and charts that are used to enhance the text.  I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly. This book will be of particular interest to advanced students, academics, and practitioners. Although statistical background is necessary to comprehend the advanced analytical techniques, most readers are likely to benefit from the overviews provided in this well-written book."

·         The contents will be articulated in a very reader-friendly, applications-oriented and non-mathematical fashion.

·         Promotes the current overarching business philosophy of customer/market focus by emphasizing the need for Market Research to provide the insights required for making decisions.

·         Identifies such troubling current trends as biased sample answers on long questionnaires, and "professionals" whose job is to skew focus group responses.

·         Will employ top flight international researchers from both academia and practice to provide a broad range of ideas and applications.

This paper offers reflections on the challenges, for research and marketing education, associated with an aim of making academic marketing research impact more strongly on marketing practice. It derives from a Special Session at the Academy of Marketing Conference 2011, and reports on the ways in which academic findings are presented, the difficulties in integrating new developments in practice into the academic research and education agendas, and aspects of academic career pathways that may affect the relationship between theory and practice. The discussion points to the need for new ways of making academic research accessible if it is to have a greater impact on practice. Accessibility should not be at the expense of normal academic rigour. It could take various forms such as new submission categories for journal articles, the development of new blogging communities, and other means of fostering the practitioner/academic dialogue. The paper concludes by requesting the engagement of the entire marketing community to participate in a new discussion group on LinkedIn that has been specifically set up to foster dialogue and encourage progress.

This article looks back over the past two decades to describe how teaching of undergraduate marketing research has (or has not) changed. Sweeping changes in technology and society have certainly affected how marketing research is designed and implemented—but how has this affected teaching of this important topic? Although the purpose of marketing research is still to better understand target customer needs, the tools are different now: customer data are typically collected using technology-based interfaces in place of such instruments as mailed, telephone, or in-person surveys. Observational techniques collect more data electronically rather than requiring a human recorder. Similarly, sampling has changed: sample frames are no longer widely used. Many of these changes are not yet fully discussed in marketing research courses. On the other hand, there is increasing interest in and availability of courses and programs in marketing data analytics, which teach specialized skills related...

Downloads and resources for students

Download this textbook.

The current edition of the textbook is 1.0, published on 08/23/2021. For more information on updates to the textbook, consult the Version Information section of the back matter.

This textbook is available in multiple formats to make it easy for students to access and read. All downloads are free, and can be shared in compliance with the copyright license contained in the Copyright Information section of the front matter. Downloads are hosted in our Google Drive folder .

You can also order a print edition of the textbook , through Printme1.com . The cost is about $60 (including shipping) for a Velo-bound black-and-white book. This textbook is a non-commercial work, and the authors receive no financial benefit from print sales.

Reading on a phone or computer in a PDF reader
Printing on paper
Reading on a Kindle
Reading on iBooks, Nook, and other e-readers
Copying and pasting some or all of the textbook into a new book.
Importing some or all of the textbook into an LMS platform (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.)

Most students choose a blend of accessing the textbook using the https://pressbooks.rampages.us/msw-research/ website as well as downloaded copies on their computer, phone, or tablet.

Reading and taking notes in a web browser using Hypothes.is

In addition to the downloads above, you can browse this textbook like a normal website. If this is your first textbook that is also a website (or maybe just your first one built using Pressbooks), we’ve made a short introduction video for how to browse around the textbook. It is a good idea to bookmark https://pressbooks.rampages.us/msw-research/ in your mobile and computer web browser, so you can easily access the textbook whenever you may need it.

As you can see in the video below, we also recommend Hypothes.is for taking notes and highlighting directly on a website like this textbook, including doing so with other students in a private group. We strongly prefer that you use private groups when annotating with hypothes.is (not the default public forum).

Personally, I (Matt) prefer to read e-textbooks on my phone, but I also prefer to read most things on my phone. This tutorial is about how to read and take notes on a website (like this textbook) on your phone using Hypothes.is. As I mention in the video, this is how I edited the book before publication, and it’s a great way to read on-the-go.

Reading and taking notes in a PDF reader

PDF is the most commonly used download option on the textbook. If you prefer to make notes directly on an e-textbook (like highlights and comments), you should use a PDF reader beyond what is offered in your web browser. At minimum, you will want a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat of Foxit Reader which allow you to place comments in PDFs.

If the links inside your PDF do not work, you are using the print PDF instead of the web PDF.  The print PDF should only be used to print the book.

We would like to highlight two options for PDF readers, in particular. The beta edition of Zotero includes a PDF annotation tool, and researchers can use tags, notes, highlights, and other features to mark up the textbook and take notes. We have included a tutorial below. Unfortunately, you cannot perform group annotation in Zotero in shared PDFs, so this is for individual note-taking only.

If you would like to share notes with other students in your class, consider sharing the same PDF copy of the textbook in a shared Google Drive folder. Comments and highlights made in a shared PDF are visible to everyone with access to that document, and it’s a nice way to build a social reading and learning space.

Printing this textbook yourself

Some students love print! You can print this textbook out. In many ways, it’s superior to taking notes digitally. In our classes, students have printed out chapters as they were due each week, and assembled them into a 3-ring binder along with class notes and activities over the semester.

This is a long textbook, so you might want to talk to your university’s printing office or a local copy shop to see if they will print it for you with a 3-hole punch or cheap binding. You can also order a print edition of the textbook , through Printme1.com , where you can select a 3-hole punch option or other bindings. Copy shops and print vendors are permitted under the CC-BY-NC-SA license to charge you to print a copy.

Creating your own version of this textbook

Hello PhD and DSW students! We would love for you to create your own edition of the textbook! (also…all of your projects should be open pedagogy and renewable assignments ). The four core authors of this projects were in the same doctoral cohort together, and we think that open education is a fantastic platform to scale collaboration among social workers receiving the most advanced education our discipline provides!

You can easily create a clone of this textbook (or any subsection of it) using Pressbooks.

  • Download the Pressbooks XML file for this textbook.
  • Create a Pressbooks account for yourself (and your textbook team).
  • Go to Tools/Import.
  • Open this textbook’s XML file using the prompt.
  • Select all textbook elements to create a perfect clone or specify which chapters or sections you want to import.
  • It’s now yours! Do whatever you want with it!
  • Make sure to abide by the Creative Commons license and provide proper attribution for all material from this resource (see Copyright Information and Attributions Index for examples).
  • To publish your adapted textbook publicly, you will have to pay $99 to Pressbooks to host your book.
  • Feel free to consult the  BCCampus self-publishing guide .  You can also ask me at [email protected] for help.  I’m genuinely happy to help!
  • Tell us about them! Knowing our community impact is part of what keeps this project going!

If you make changes to the ancillary resources or textbook you feel the community would benefit from, or if you develop new resources, please consider sharing them with the the authors for inclusion in future editions of this textbook and on OER Commons  or  Merlot .  Please provide attribution following the best practices in the BCCampus Adaptation guide .

If you prefer to create your own custom version of this textbook within a learning management system (LMS), please use the Common Cartridge 1.1 file to import some or all of the textbook into your institution’s platform. Pressbooks provides a detailed tutorial for importing into every major LMS platform .

Create and share resources for other students

Open educational resources are all about collaboration, and we hope to foster that collaboration across students using this open textbook. If you create resources you think would be useful to other students, please contact [email protected] and we will consider them for inclusion in Appendix A: Student-to-student resources as well as in an appropriate place in the textbook. We are happy to provide a letter documenting your contribution to the project, if requested.

We want your feedback!

If you have feedback on the textbook (whether it’s something you liked or something that could be better), we’d love to hear from you. Contact [email protected] if you prefer to send an email, memo, or marked up document. We encourage you to use the Hypothes.is annotation group for Community Feedback . We check for feedback regularly, but we are usually only able to get to revisions over the summer academic break.

Economic and financial risk insights: strong fundamentals contrast volatility, rate uncertainties

Article information and share options, key takeaways.

  • Growth: normalisation progresses. Upside risk to full-year growth in US and Europe after a strong 2Q24, even though economic momentum is set to soften in 2H24.
  • Inflation: disinflation on track, but some turbulence ahead . Reverse base effects will feed inflation volatility in 2H24, but we continue to expect a steady return to 2% targets.
  • Interest rates: renewed focus on labour markets . Recent employment softening adds upside risk to our US rate call for this year.

Solid fundamentals despite market volatility. The upside surprise on 2Q24 US GDP growth (2.8% annualised) reiterates that economic fundamentals remain healthy. However, early 3Q24 data has generated a sharp rise in financial market volatility. A soft July US nonfarm payrolls report, hawkish communications from the Bank of Japan (BoJ), and rising hostilities in the Middle East saw the S&P 500 Volatility Index spike to its highest level since October 2020 (see Figure 1).

Figure 1: S&P 500 Volatility Index

While the 20 bp rise in the unemployment rate triggered the Sahm Rule 1 recession indicator in the US (see Figure 2), the increase remains low relative to past cycles with the recession indicator distorted from COVID-19. The increased jobless rate is likely due to more cautious hiring behaviour and growing labour supply, and we do not expect imminent downturn (see Figure 3). In the euro area, the recovery continued in 2Q24, apart from in Germany where the economy contracted by 0.1% q/q. We maintain a below-consensus growth outlook for 2025 amidst heightened downside risks from geopolitics and ongoing weak prospects in Germany. Activity in China remains fragile; we see downside risks to our end-year forecasts.

Figure 2: Sahm rule recession indicator

Figure 3: US unemployment rate increases from cycle low

Bumpy near-term outlook, but 2% is coming into view. Reverse base effects over the coming months will unwind some of the disinflation progress seen in 2Q24, but the direction of travel remains towards the 2% central bank targets (see Figure 4). In Europe, services inflation remains the key driver of overall inflation (see Figure 5) and adds some upside risk to our 2024 CPI forecasts, but this will likely ease over the medium-term as wage growth decelerates. In Japan, a more sustainable trend in underlying inflation suggests policy normalisation will continue at a measured pace into 2025. However, recent Yen appreciation could weigh on inflation and delay the pace of rate increases.

Figure 4: Harmonised CPI inflation

Figure 5: Euro area inflation composition

Interest rates

Emphasis shifts from inflation to normalisation. The July US jobs report cements our view that the Federal Reserve will begin to ease policy in September, with a rising likelihood of three rate cuts this year, one more than our current forecast of two. We maintain our view that the European Central Bank will dial back restrictive policy cautiously given ongoing services inflation strength. We still expect rate cuts to come quarterly, with the next cut in September. In Japan, we expect the BoJ will wait for calmer market conditions and monitor closely any US slowdown before acting, but that it will continue to normalise policy in 2025.

Figure 6: Japan policy interest rate and core CPI inflation

Baseline view

Upside risks to our 2024 US and Europe GDP forecasts remain. Disinflation continues and could bring greater rate cuts in 2H24.
