Eman’s Hot Take: Parents, DO NOT Take Your Kids To See “It”!

' src=

It is a movie that adults to this day will claim was the primary cause for their fear of clowns. If you’re an adult in your 30s-40s, then you probably fall into that category. You probably also saw “It” when you were a young child as well.

The R ratings for films in the 90s could probably easily pass for a rated PG-13 film by today’s standards. We’ve grown to be more desensitized  of adult language, violence, and adult situations. So it’s only natural that as our standards shift and change into adulthood, we will pass on those standards to our children.

Video Review

If you wanted to get a spoiler-free review of “It”, feel free to watch the review below.

My Daughter’s Question

My 10 year old, 5th grade daughter came up to me and asked me an interesting question. She said,

“Daddy, do you think it’s appropriate for someone my age to watch that It movie?”

I replied back to her, “HELL MotherF*#&@ing, No it’s not appropriate!” (At least, that’s what I wanted to say to her. ) I told her that the movie wasn’t suitable for someone her age for a number of reasons (I’ll get to that in a moment). The main reason was that she’s not allowed to sleep in me and my wife’s bedroom due to her being scared out of her mind. I then asked her what prompted her to ask me that question.

She said, “A bunch of kids in my class said that their parents are taking them to see the It movie.” At this point, I had to get this off my chest because as a movie critic, I often times get asked this questions about movies.  One of those questions is whether the film is suitable for their children or not.

No Judgement Zone

This is the point where I put on my “non-judgemental hat” on. All I can do as a professional movie critic is simply tell someone what type of content is in a movie. That way the parent can make their own judgement on whether or not they should bring their kids to see a movie. It’s not my place to raise other people’s children, nor is it my place to tell parents how to raise their kids. I know I certainly wouldn’t appreciate being told what to do with my kids.

( WARNING : Be advised that the following contains MILD spoilers for “It”. )

In the opening scene of the It movie, you’ve got an opening scene where a child gets their arm brutally ripped off from the limp. Blood gushing everywhere. In another scene you’ve got innuendos of sexual abuse and pedophilia, and the over sexualization of preteens. You’ve also got a number of instances where the children are dropping F-bombs and making really crude, adult jokes.

It [Credit: Warner Bros Pictures]

Entering the Judgement Zone

Okay, now let me take off my “non-judgmental hat” and put on my “Parental judgement hat”. Given what I previously described for the movie “It”, I want parents to think about a few things. Many of the topics I mentioned about the movie are also inappropriate for children in the public sphere. I’m mainly talking about in school. Children are usually not allowed to use foul language, engage in sexualized behavior, or the like. Those are the things that typically get children in trouble. Since we all know that children are like sponges, and they absorb a lot, we simply have to be mindful of what we’re exposing them too. Because just as with any sponge, some of that stuff will eventually leak out.

Which brings me to my next point. While you may be raising the nicest, sweetest and most innocent kid in the whole wide world, you can’t protect them from everything. If you’re a parent, you may have already experienced a situation where your child comes home and says or does something out the ordinary. Maybe they picked up a new phrase, or they start doing something that completely bewilders you. First thing that comes out of your mouth is “Where did you learn that?”. Well, odds are that they picked up whatever that was from that other kid in school. You know, the kid at school who’s parents allow them to do and watch certain things that are typically not appropriate for their age.

The Real Monster Isn’t The Clown

It [Credit; Warner Bros Pictures]

I suppose I could understand why some parents allow their children to watch ghosts or monsters in movies. It’s easy to just dismiss those things as just make-believe. However, the It movie introduces elements of pedophilia and sexual abuse. In the movie a pharmacist makes a few comments in a manner to flirt with an under aged girl. Later in the film, we’re introduced to a father who clearly has dark, sexual motives for his own daughter.

These are the real life monsters that we should be protecting our children from seeing. It’s obviously an unfortunate reality that a family member could be the perpetrator of sexual abuse. However, the real question is do you really need your kids to even entertain that notion visually? Does your little girl really need to think that there’s a remote possiblity that daddy may want her to be more than just his “special little girl”?

Final Thoughts

Being a parent is tough. There is no manual. What you do in your own household is your business. How you decide to raise your child is completely your business and your right. If you’re a parent considering to take your child to see “It”, then odds are that “It” wouldn’t be the first rated R movie your child has seen.  In my opinion, the It movie should be seen by teens and older. Since I obviously can’t stop you from taking your kids to see “It” I would only ask this: Please be sure to talk to your kids after the movie. I don’t mean just “Hey what did you think of that?”. Ensure that your kids know that a lot of the things they saw shouldn’t be replicated or repeated in school or around other children. If you’re already doing that, or if you’re kids know better, then completely disregard all of this. You’re clearly doing a much better job as a parent than the rest of us.

Which are your favorite Youtube reviewers that review movies in 10-12 minutes videos?

I am specifically putting a time limit. A lot of people in other reddits recommend reviewers that make 30-40 minute videos. Please do not post that here (DoubleToasted for example).

My favorite is Mark Kermode. He does not give scores but I like the way he presents the review. I like that he knows a lot but at the same time that does not stop him from enjoying a "pop corn" movie. I trust this guy.

I also like DrumDums. He is a casual guy that is crazy for horror films. I watch him for horror films reviews. I find that I like a lot of the movies he likes. AGAIN, he is a CASUAL YOUTUBER, not a Mark Kermode. He also have a couple of buddies that review movies just like him. I do not share their taste. I am mentioning this because probaly you may not like Drumdums but could like one of his buddies.

I enjoy Chris Stuckmann even though lately he has given me the impression of becoming pretentious with his reviews. Still watch him though.

Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone headline eerie, funny ‘Kinds of Kindness’

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons play multiple roles in ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ director Yorgos Lanthimos’ return to the absurdist horror of his early work.

For his ninth feature film, ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ Greek director and co-writer Yorgos Lanthimos (working again with his frequent writing partner, Efthimis Filippou ) returns to the surreal horror/comedy of earlier works like ‘ Dogtooth ,’ ‘Alps,’ and ‘ The Lobster .’ Not that you could call his recent, Oscar-winning films like ‘ The Favourite ’ and ‘ Poor Things ’ conventional, exactly: both still incorporate Lanthimos’ sense of the absurd, his visceral approach to sex and physical violence, and a heightened reality into more linear, accessible narratives.

For ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ however, he’s gone back to the more enigmatic storytelling of his earlier films, skirting the line between dark comedy and outright horror (although more on the comedic side than, say, ‘ The Killing of a Sacred Deer ’). Perhaps in a sly wink to the format that spawned cult horror favorites like ‘ Dead of Night ’ (1945), ‘ The House That Dripped Blood ’ (1971), ‘ Creepshow ’ (1982) and more recent entries like ‘ Ghost Stories ’ (2017) and the ‘ V/H/S ’ series, ‘Kinds of Kindness’ is an anthology film, telling three loosely connected stories starring the same troupe of actors in different roles.

The result is a long (nearly three hours) yet continuously entertaining cinematic hall of mirrors, at times frightening, revolting, and hilarious, with Lanthimos’ ensemble of actors – led, for their third feature together, by Emma Stone – clearly enjoying the exercise. Some viewers may find Lanthimos’ style here too much of a slow burn, while others may be frustrated by the unreality that intrudes in each story and his often cold view of the characters. But this is a rewarding, eerie, and unpredictable look at human behavior and the dark lengths to which people will go to win approval or acceptance.

Story and Direction

The single thread that connects the three tales is a character named R.M.F. ( Yorgos Stefanakos ), who appears at key points in all three narratives yet whose presence is never fully explained. The character also provides the title for each segment. In the first, “The Death of R.M.F.,” Jesse Plemons plays Robert, a man who seems to have it all: a beautiful house, a loving wife (Hong Chau), and a successful career with a boss, Raymond (Willem Dafoe), who seemingly loves him like a son. But early on it’s made clear that Robert’s life is actually controlled by Raymond, down to what he eats, what he reads, and even when he has sex with his wife.

After Raymond gives Robert a task that Robert is simply unable to do, Robert is fired – and his life spirals downward from there. His wife leaves him, he has to sell off prized possessions, and he becomes increasingly desperate in his efforts to win back Raymond’s affection. Things are only complicated when he begins a relationship with a woman (Emma Stone) who also seems to have come under Raymond’s sinister wing.

The control that our employers have over our lives – aren’t we all on call all the time? – is very much taken to an extreme in ‘The Death of R.M.F.,’ but a theme here that recurs mainly in the third segment is our seemingly inescapable need to be accepted. Robert goes to terrible lengths to get back into Raymond’s good graces, and his spiral into near-madness is as disquieting as it is darkly humorous.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Mamoudou Athie on the set of 'Kinds of Kindness.'

(L to R) Yorgos Lanthimos and Mamoudou Athie on the set of 'Kinds of Kindness.' Photo by Atsushi Nishijima. Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2024 Searchlight Pictures All Rights Reserved.

There’s a different kind of rejection afoot in ‘R.M.F. is Flying,’ the second and probably least effective of the three stories. Plemons again takes center stage as Daniel, a cop whose wife Liz (Stone) has gone missing on some sort of scientific ocean expedition. He watches videos of get-togethers with their best friends (played by Mamoudou Athie and Margaret Qualley), although the videos are not exactly of backyard barbecues. And then Liz is found and returns home – but Daniel soon begins to suspect that the woman in his house is not his wife.

There is plenty of atmosphere and the same dark humor in this segment, but even for a movie that does not rely on normal logic, its story doesn’t cohere as well as ‘The Death of R.M.F.’ or the third segment, ‘R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich.’ Yet Daniel’s psychological descent, combined with Liz’s apparently odd behavior, is a metaphor for the dynamics in any human relationship: how well do we truly know the person next to us, that we are spending our life with?

Emma Stone steps up to the lead role in ‘R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich,’ playing a woman named Emily who has abandoned her husband and daughter and joined a bizarre cult led by Omi (Dafoe) and his wife Aka (Chau). She and fellow cult member Andrew (Plemons) are tasked with searching for a person prophesized to have miraculous powers, who will become a leader of great importance to the cult.

Willem Dafoe in 'Kinds of Kindness.'

Willem Dafoe in 'Kinds of Kindness.' Photo by Atsushi Nishijima. Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2024 Searchlight Pictures All Rights Reserved.

‘R.M.F. Eats a Sandwich’ sort of comes full circle, focusing on the lengths that people will go to in order to feel like they’re part of something greater than themselves. It’s heavily implied that the women in the cult are allowed only to have sex with Omi, and must undergo purification rituals and face exile if they have sex with others, debasing themselves to stay within Omi’s good graces. There are contrivances along the way (Emily’s need to drive recklessly seems to exist only to serve the plot later on) and, unlike the first two segments, ‘Sandwich’ ends with an abrupt twist ending straight out of O. Henry.

As in his previous work, Lanthimos is matter-of-fact in his portrayal of violence and sex: the former is abrupt, unpleasant, and inevitable (including one hard-to-watch scene where someone chops off their finger), while the latter isn’t erotic in the usual sense, but primal, urgent, and messy. Lanthimos and DP Robbie Ryan frame it and light it all simply and functionally, often going from wide shots straight to immersive close-ups involving a face or body part.

Kudos also to Jerskin Fendrix for his minimalist, ominous score, which alternates between single plinks on the piano (a la ‘ Eyes Wide Shut ’) more thunderous, doom-laden chords, and apocalyptic choral bursts. The music both heightens the atmosphere and comments on the action, the latter often to subtly hilarious effect.

Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe in 'Kinds of Kindness.'

(L to R) Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe in 'Kinds of Kindness.' Photo by Atsushi Nishijima. Courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. © 2024 Searchlight Pictures All Rights Reserved.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ is clearly a film made for actors to stretch themselves as much as possible, with all the main actors (with the exception of Hunter Schafer) playing different roles in each segment. The MVP in this case is Plemons, who plays two different needy, insecure men in the first two stories yet manages to create two complete, wholly distinctive performances (also very different from his frightening cameo in ‘ Civil War ’ earlier this year). He changes himself again in the third story, where he’s more of a supporting player, and his work throughout is nothing less than a tour de force.

Emma Stone, of course, is outstanding as always, with a supporting role in the first segment, a larger one in the second, and the lead in the third. Her character is more enigmatic and less fleshed out in the second story, but she is riveting in the final tale as a deeply damaged woman who has withdrawn so much from the world that she cannot even find any spare warmth for her daughter.

Willem Dafoe is excellent as a malevolent father figure in all three stories (especially in the first and last), while Hong Chau, Margaret Qualley (who does her meatiest work in segment three), Mamoudou Athie, and the rest weave seamlessly in and out of each section of the film like the members of a seasoned stage company able to take on any role in the repertory.

Final Thoughts

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in 'Kinds of Kindness.'

If you have found Yorgos Lanthimos’ work troublesome or even harrowing to sit through in the past, you might have a tough time watching ‘Kinds of Kindness’: there is cruelty (mostly to humans, but also briefly to an animal), callousness, sexual assault, and sadistic behavior. It steps in and out of reality, sometimes jarringly, and it can be frustrating in the way it doesn’t lay out the meaning of everything you see.

Yet the film is also bracing, mind-bending, and utterly unpredictable from start to finish, with the film not feeling its length at all as one gets caught up in the nightmarish surreality that Lanthimos constructs and maintains. Ironically, kindness is found only sparingly in these stories, but that may be more like the real world than anything else.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

2024 Le Mans 24: Ferrari Wins Back-to-Back, Nearly Runs Out of Fuel Doing It

By Beverly Braga

Posted on Jun 16, 2024 2:51 PM EDT

3 minute read

Don’t call it a comeback, but what else would it be? After a 50-year hiatus, last year Ferrari returned to the Circuit de la Sarthe and topped the podium with its No. 51 499P Hypercar . This year, it was No. 50’s time to shine as the overall 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, at the hands of Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco, and Miguel Molina. The defending champ No. 51 finished third, with the No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid just ahead in second.

However, Ferrari very nearly could’ve had zero podium places, as the Italian automaker encountered some drama in the final hours of endurance racing’s crown jewel. Not to mention the rainy weather, heavy competition up front, and an overnight safety car period that lasted more than four hours.

In the last two hours of the race, the right-side door of the leading No. 50 came open. This forced a pit stop , prompted an orange-and-black flag, and earned the car a five-second penalty. It also gave the No. 7 Toyota an opportunity to close the gap. Alas, it wasn’t to be.

emans movie reviews

A spin at the Dunlop Curve forced Toyota driver Jose Maria Lopez to briefly stop on the track. Any time gained before was now entirely lost. With just half an hour to go, the No. 7 Toyota was still 30 seconds behind the No. 50 Ferrari. Lopez worked tirelessly to cover that gap, but a reported issue with his car’s turbocharger, brief caution due to a stranded GT3 car, and untimely rainfall all conspired to give Nielsen, at the wheel of the No. 50 Ferrari, some sorely needed breathing room.

It was a very lucky turn of events for Nielsen indeed, given that he pitted for fuel with 51 minutes reminaing in the race, and had to drive extremely conservatively to make his energy store last while the hard-charging Lopez bit off seconds of his advantage per lap. At times it seemed like Ferrari might’ve made too optimistic a calculation, in classic Maranello tradition. But Nielsen ultimately made the plan stick, and the slower pace of wet-weather racing helped him save resources and take the checkered flag with a mere 2% of “virtual energy tank”—a combination of fuel and electric power—remaining.

The No. 51 Ferrari didn’t have a clear path to third place, either. Driver Alessandro Pier Guidi had made contact with Brendon Hartley’s No. 8 Toyota two hours earlier. The collision caused Hartley’s car to face the wrong side of the track at Mulsanne Corner. The No. 8 Toyota ultimately finished fifth, just behind the No. 6 factory Porsche 963 .

emans movie reviews

Overall, the 92nd running was anything but smooth, with an overnight and early morning period littered with safety car periods, worst of all a four-hour stop to the racing action caused by heavy rain. Alpine and BMW notched DNFs for both their Hypercar entries, and the No. 83 “privateer” AF Corse 499P, which counted former Formula 1 phenom Robert Kubica as one of its drivers, bowed out of the lead fight early Saturday afternoon due to a hybrid system problem.

Further down the order, both LMP2-class winners United Autosports and LMGT3 winners Manthey EMA counted four rookies among their six total drivers. It was a hard-fought Le Mans by all, and entertaining despite the overnight pauses. More than anything else, it’ll make the wait for next year’s race feel brutally long.

  • The car was originally painted in Le Mans Blue, but the exterior needs some TLC.
  • Despite the Camaro’s age, the interior looks to be in good condition.
  • Mecum claims the car still has its original 302 cubic-inch V8.

Before the tragic passing of Paul Walker and Roger Rodas in a Porsche Carrera GT in late 2013, the two friends owned several cars together and had several projects in the works. This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28 is one of the final project cars they purchased and will be auctioned off by Mecum in August.

Unfortunately, Walker and Rodas were unable to finish the car before their deaths, but someone now has the opportunity to restore and perhaps modify the Camaro. The car was originally purchased new from Martens Chevrolet of Reedly, California, and later sold to Chevy collector Merle Duprey in 1982 before Walker and Rodas bought it. The listing reveals it was sold back to Durpey as part of Walker’s estate in 2013 and is now sold by Solo Speed Shop.

The classic muscle car needs a lot of work to return to its former glory. It left the factory painted in Le Mans Blue, but most of the paint has worn off. Remarkably, it sits on the original Z/28 Rally wheels with BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires and continues to rock front and rear bumper guards. The exterior needs some TLC, but for the most part, the panels appear free of damage, and with a fresh coat of paint, the car should look brilliant.

As tired and worn as the exterior is, the interior isn’t in bad shape, considering its age. The material on the bucket seats looks to be in good condition, as have the black plastics found throughout and the wooden trim on the center console.

Collectors will be pleased to know the car retains its original, numbers-matching 302 cubic-inch V8 and four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. The winning bidder may choose to restore the powertrain to its former glory or modify it. Either way, this unfinished Camaro Z/28 could be the perfect project car.

If you’re interested in bidding on Walker’s old Camaro , be sure to head over to the Mecum Auctions listing.
