1. Choose a Person You Admire:

Select someone who has impacted your life in a special way, or someone whose qualities you admire greatly. Look for role models in your life. In addition, it is important to choose someone you have enough information.

For example writing a descriptive essay about mother is easier than writing an essay about anyone else.

2. Research the Person Thoroughly:

Before you begin writing, make sure you have enough information about the person. You can research by talking to people who know the person well, or reading books and articles written about them.

3. Create an Outline:

This helps keep your essay organized and focused. You can use the basic structure of an essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion as a guide. So make sure you include all of the important points in your outline.

4. Use Vivid Language and Imagery:

Describe anything that stands out about the person, such as their physical appearance and mannerisms. Use powerful adjectives to give life to your essay and make it more interesting for your readers.

5. Include Relevant Examples:

Using real-life examples adds depth and texture to your essay. These can be anything from stories of when you met the person or a unique trait that they possess. Examples will also help make your essay more illustrative and descriptive.

6. Write an Effective Conclusion:

Your conclusion should serve as a summary of all the points you have discussed in your essay. Make sure to end on a positive note and provide your readers with a lasting impression of your subject’s character.

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

How to Write a Descriptive Essay About a Person You Admire

how to write an essay on a person i admire

Writing a descriptive essay, or a “describe a person you admire essay” can be a fantastic way of developing your writing skills. These skills will be particularly useful if you choose to write fiction.

This type of writing is very different to academic writing, but it is hugely rewarding, and doing it well can become a stepping stone into a career in writing in the United Kingdom.

Step one: Choose your subject/Brainstorm

The essay about someone you admire could focus on, for example, your father, your mother, a friend, a grandparent, a celebrity like UK favourite Kate Middleton, a public figure like Mahatma Ghandi or your favourite teacher.

Write a paragraph about a person you admire as you brainstorm. Think about what message you want to get across.

Step two: Write your first draft

Your first draft is exactly that – a first draft. Don’t worry too much about everything being perfect. The most important thing at this point is getting all your thoughts down on paper.

Remember, this is a descriptive essay about a person you love and feel admiration for – you want the reader to feel as though they know the person after reading your piece.

A good writer can make you feel as though you know a person. A great writer makes you care about the person.

Show, don’t tell

I’m sure you’ve come across this term before. It’s the mantra of most creative writers and their teachers. But what does it actually mean?

It’s simple really. Use words to build up a picture in your reader’s mind. Don’t just tell them things; let them see it in their mind.

For example:

Telling – The man was angry

Showing – The man jumped to his feet, his face red and frowning. He gave an unintelligible roar, spraying spittle in front of his face. He crossed the room in three quick strides, wrenching the door open and slamming it shut behind him.

Do you see the difference there? You can show the reader that the man is angry without even using the word. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why showing is a better writing technique.

Use the senses

To really bring your piece to life and make the reader feel a personal connection to your writing, use all of the senses:

Sight – Describe the physical attributes of the person

Sound – What does their speech sound like?

Touch – What do they feel like – for example, are their hands rough from years of hard work?

Smell – What smells do you associate with the person? Did they always wear a certain scent?

Taste – Do you associate any tastes with the person? Did they have a signature cake recipe that no one can match?

Step three: Edit

Reread your work, concentrating on the following:

  • Does the essay flow well? If not, re-order your paragraphs until it does.
  • Try to imagine you are reading about a stranger. Have you included enough details to make you feel like you know them? Do you know what they look like? Do you feel as though you understand their character and motivations?
  • Have you showed rather than told?
  • Of course, check your spelling, punctuation and grammar too. Have you used clichés? Too many adjectives?

If, at the end of the piece, you feel something towards the person, you have done a good job!

How to Write a Speech About Someone I Admire

Kimberley McGee

Tips on Writing a Welcome Address at a High School Graduation

It is an honor to be asked or to be able to write a speech about someone that you admire. When the task is to write a speech, it can feel like a daunting endeavor, particularly when the subject is someone you look up to or who had a large impact on your life. Whether it is for an award ceremony or a school assignment, family reunion or wedding anniversary, cobbling together a compelling speech about someone you admire can be a moving moment as well as an enjoyable experience.

Getting Started on Speech Writing

Before you reach for all the words, begin with just a few. Create an outline that will touch on your key points. Consider the person and jot down what comes to mind when you concentrate on the individual as well as how he or she has made an impact on you and others. If it is a family member, reach into the past and showcase some of his or her early experiences.

Once you have a relatively rough outline of what you hope to touch on, write your introduction. The introduction sets the tone and grabs your audience. Some ways to craft an attention-grabbing introduction is to start with a question, a well-known joke or anecdote. Make sure it is something that the entire audience can understand.

Person I Admire Speech Body Basics

When writing a speech about someone you admire, turn your attention not only to the person, but accomplishments, inflections of speech or other personal traits. There are two objectives when giving a speech, to make a good impression and leave the audience with a clear and informative understanding of your subject. Consider your audience before sitting down to write your speech. The missive should reflect the occasion, either light and jovial or stern and touching. Focus your audience’s attention on the main facts quickly by giving a preview in the opening descriptive paragraph. Establish goodwill from the beginning and grab the crowd’s attention with a pithy turn of phrase or poignant piece of literature.

Reach Out for Inspiration

Look at an example of a speech about someone who was admired for speech writing tips. Comedian and actress Maya Rudolph gave a gripping commencement speech in 2015 that focused on people that she admired. These included her family as well as people she admired in the industry, including Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce. If you need moments of inspiration while you are writing your speech about someone you admire, turn to those who have gone before you. Studying compelling speeches can help you understand how to convey emotion and impact through your carefully chosen words. If you are writing about family members, ask those who have given speeches in the past for encouragement.

Sample Descriptive Essay About A Person You Admire

  • Views 334603
  • Author Abigal W.

When asked about the person I admire in the universe, I do not require to look at celebrities or any other big influential names in society. When it comes to me, the person I admire most in the world is my mother. We all have people whom we consider to be highly inspirational and influential to look upon, and in my case, my mother is an excellent example of these characters. She is an extraordinary person in my life because of her enduring strength that I dearly admire, and she is also kind as well as supportive.

One thing I most admire about my mother for is her strength, which appears to be resistant throughout hard times. My mother is a single mother, and she has managed to raise three children all by herself, providing us with a good life and education, while still balancing work. For instance, when my brother and I cleared high school, only one of us hoped to join college because of our financial situation, but she worked two jobs to ensure that we enrolled in college. Single mothers across the globe face financial instability where they are forced to engage in other strategies to extend income to take care of their family (West et al. 359). I hold great admiration for my mother because of her determination, how she never backs down, and the way she stands up for what she believes in no matter the hardships that come along.

My mother has a striking appearance, but behind this, she is very alluring, admirable, and kind. At first, one can conclude that she is a blunt and cold person because of her quiet nature, but after knowing her, she turns out to be a friendly, warm-hearted, gentle, and generous person. My mother has been a dedicated individual in the society through volunteering in church during weekends and holidays as well as helping in the local homeless shelters. Kindness is crucial and healthy since one takes pride in caring for others since they need caring, and it gives people a pleasant feeling (Adamu par. 6). Thanks to my mother, I have grown to be a kind-hearted and deeply-caring person since I believe that it's upon me to help those in need whenever I am capable.

I am lucky to have a mother who always supports me no matter my misgivings. No matter the activity I am in or the decision I make, my mother is still there for me to give me advice and encouragement, but at the end of the day, she is at all times by my side. I had a difficult time adapting to my first year in high school, and I almost quit, but my mum listened to my grievances, and with her support, I managed to finish high school. Supportive behavior is crucial for individual well-being, especially when it comes to emotional support, where a person can be able to relieve distress from a challenge (MacGeorge and Van Swol 7). My mother's supportive character has given me the strength to endure a lot of challenging situations in life as well as learn a lot in what life has to offer.

Special people like my mother exist to make our lives better and to mold us to become a better version of ourselves. My mother is a strong spirited person, kind-hearted, has unbreakable strength and very supportive. Over the years, I have learned a lot through her character and thoughts, which have molded me to the caring, decent, and brilliant person I am today. The people around us turn out to be the best role models.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

Introduction.

I admire many famous people, but the one I admire the most is Albert Einstein. He was a renowned physicist known for his theory of relativity.

Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He showed a keen interest in mathematics and physics from a young age.

Achievements

Einstein is famous for his theory of relativity. His E=mc2 equation has significantly influenced modern physics.

Einstein was not just intelligent, but also kind-hearted. He fought for peace and civil rights, showing his admirable character.

250 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

Among the galaxy of great personalities, one person I deeply admire is the renowned physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking. His contributions to science and his indomitable spirit in the face of adversity have always been a source of inspiration for me.

Contribution to Science

Hawking’s groundbreaking work in the field of theoretical physics and cosmology has revolutionized our understanding of the universe. His research on black holes and the nature of time has had profound implications, challenging the established norms and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.

Overcoming Adversity

Diagnosed with a debilitating motor neuron disease at the age of 21, Hawking was given a mere two years to live. However, this did not deter him. Despite his physical limitations, he continued his scientific pursuits with relentless determination. This aspect of his life is a testament to his resilience and an example of how physical constraints can’t limit the power of the human mind.

Hawking’s legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions. He was an advocate for the importance of science education and made complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public through his bestselling book, “A Brief History of Time”. His life story, encapsulating his scientific achievements and personal struggles, continues to inspire millions around the world.

Stephen Hawking’s life and work embody the power of perseverance, the importance of curiosity, and the pursuit of knowledge. His story is a reminder that limitations are only as restricting as we allow them to be. To me, he is not just a famous scientist, but a symbol of resilience, making him a person I deeply admire.

500 Words Essay on A Famous Person You Admire

Unyielding pursuit of innovation.

Elon Musk’s unwavering commitment to innovation is nothing short of inspiring. He has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible, transforming science fiction into reality. His vision for SpaceX was met with skepticism, yet he persisted. Today, SpaceX is the first privately-funded company to not only send a spacecraft to the International Space Station but also develop a reusable rocket, drastically cutting the cost of space travel. Musk’s innovative spirit is also evident in Tesla Inc., where he revolutionized the auto industry by making electric vehicles a viable and desirable alternative to fossil fuel-powered cars.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Adversity is a common theme in Musk’s journey. He has faced numerous challenges, including near-bankruptcy of Tesla and multiple failed launches at SpaceX. However, Musk’s resilience in the face of adversity is commendable. He has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to rise from setbacks, turning failures into stepping stones towards success. His ability to maintain unwavering focus on his goals, despite the odds, is a testament to his strength of character and a source of inspiration.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s relentless pursuit of innovation, resilience in the face of adversity, and vision for a sustainable future make him a person worthy of admiration. His life serves as a reminder that with determination, courage, and a clear vision, one can overcome any obstacle and make a significant impact on the world. His story inspires us to dream big, work hard, and never give up, no matter the odds.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Happy studying!

Essay On The Person I Admire The Most – 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay For Kids

Medha Saini

Key Points To Remember When Writing An Essay On The Person I Admire The Most For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on the person i admire the most for kids, paragraph on the person i admire the most for children, short essay on the person i admire the most for kids, long essay on the person i admire the most for children, what will your child learn from the essay on ‘the person i admire the most’.

Having a person whom you admire and consider an inspiration in life is of great importance.  We all need someone who we can look up to, as well as count on for always being there to support you, and help you if needed. When you need guidance, this is the person whom you trust the most. You seek their advice as you regard them highly and look up to them with respect. This is the person whom you admire the most.

Children may feel admiration for their parents, grandparents, teachers or even their best friend. They hold this person close to their heart and value their presence in their lives. Children may be asked to write an essay on ‘The person i admire the most’ in English as an assignment in school. This topic is an emotional one, and kids will be required to write from their hearts. Expressing abstract feelings in words may be challenging for kids at first, but with practice, they can master their writing skills in no time.

Let us guide your child to write a beautiful essay on this topic with some important points and examples.

Before you begin writing an essay on the given topic, keep in mind the following points:

  • Every essay should have a good introductory line and a concluding idea.
  • Think about the topic and jot down the points that come to your mind.
  • Arrange the points in a good sequence and elaborate on them to form meaningful sentences or paragraphs.
  • Try to use a few new words to showcase your vocabulary on the topic, however be sure of the meaning of the word and its correct use in context.
  • When writing about the person you admire, start by introducing the person, how they are related to you, and their unique qualities, and explain why you admire those qualities in them.

Let us begin with the simplest form of essay writing. When kids are newly introduced to essay writing, they can start by forming simple sentences and expressing their ideas in a few lines. Take a look at this example of an essay for classes 1 and 2 in 10 lines.

  • The person I admire the most is my brother Arjun.
  • He is my elder brother and also my best friend.
  • The quality I admire the most about him is that he is very helpful.
  • He always helps me with my studies whenever I have some difficulties understanding a lesson.
  • He also helps my parents with all the work in the house like cleaning, laying out the dining table and going out on his bicycle to buy groceries.
  • When he helps others selflessly, they feel very happy and wish well for him.
  • He is also a very brave and strong boy.
  • He is never scared of anything, and also takes care of me when I am scared of something like barking dogs on the streets or dark rooms.
  • He always says that instead of getting scared, we must face our fears and defeat it.
  • I admire his spirit and wish to be more like him.

As children progress academically, they will learn to write more coherent essays with several ideas connected together to form a small paragraph. For this, children will have to learn to weave individual points together to compose their essay. Check out this example of an essay on ‘The person I admire the most’.

The person I admire the most is my grandfather. He was in the army and has fought bravely to protect our country. Being an army person, the value he respects the most in life is discipline. He always teaches me about good behaviour and courteous manners. He always says, “Manners make a man” and also lives by this moral. Because of his courteousness, he is very well respected by everyone around him. All the family members have the highest regard for him. He is many generations older than me but he has always made me feel like he understands me well. So I go to him every time I need some guidance. One day when I had a fight with my sister, he explained to me that making up after a fight and extending the first hand of friendship can make me a better person. I followed his advice and the fight was immediately resolved. I admire my grandfather’s personality and conviction, and wish that I too become like him with my contribution to society and to the country.

Once your child learns how to weave their ideas into a paragraph, you can take it up a notch by teaching how to write a short essay on the given topic. In this essay for classes 1, 2 and 3, children will be required to make elaborate points and organise them in separate paragraphs with an introduction and conclusion. Take a look at this example to learn how to write a short essay:

I have many friends who are very dear to me. But the one I admire the most is my best friend Jia.

Jia is one of the best players in our school’s basketball team. Her biggest ambition is to play in the Olympics one day. She is an ace shooter and when she has the ball in her hand, there is no chance for it to miss the basket. While being excellent at sports, Jia is also very good in studies. She stands first in all the subjects in the class. Jia always remains an enthusiastic learner in class and her projects and assignments are always the most creative. She is also great at theatre. Last year, Jia took part in an English play had everyone spell-bound with her performance on the stage. She had observed her housekeeper very closely and had noted all her actions before performing the role on stage.

Jia is skilled at every activity. She has learnt this art from her mother. Her mother always taught her to put her heart and soul in everything she does. She often tells me that we should be focused and dedicated in all our pursuits. We cannot achieve much if our minds are diverted. This is the secret of her success.

I admire her for her attitude and all her achievements and wish to be like her.

When children are given an assignment to write an essay for class 3, they must put together all their knowledge, think of unique ideas, use their best vocabulary in the right context and elaborate on their points eloquently. A long essay needs a good introductory paragraph followed by a body with several well-thought out ideas and a good conclusion. Refer to these examples given below:

The Person I Admire Most – My Mother

The person I admire the most in the whole wide world is my mother. She is the most caring person in my life. She is my first, foremost and closest friend and I love her over and above everyone else.

My mother cares for me a lot and dedicated a lot of her time in helping me out throughout the day. She prepares delicious breakfast and some food for me to carry to school. When I come back from school, she talks to me all about my day and checks my homework. When it’s time for exams, she encourages me to study hard and avoid distractions. Sometimes I feel upset when she doesn’t let me watch TV for long hours and insists on studying more, but when I get a successful result, I realise that the entire credit goes to her motivation.

My mother used to work in a bank a few years back, but she left her job due to some dire situations during the pandemic. But she is a very dynamic lady. She soon started her own company that invests in small businesses and helps start-ups rise to success. Entrepreneurs consider her to be their biggest ray of hope and guiding light. Seeing how many people she has helped rise from dreamers to achievers is inspiring.

Even in the family, my mother is everyone’s favourite. She is always available to help everyone because she is an expert at everything. She cooks delicious meals, is great with home accounts and banking work, and has many other talents. She is great at crocheting, so on every special occasion, she gives handmade gifts to her friends and family.

What I love about my mother the most is that I can always depend on her. Whenever I tell her about some difficulty I face, she always guides me to come up with a solution. She encourages me to be independent and handle my own circumstances with her help and guidance whenever required. I can also trust her with anything, knowing that she will always have my back.

My mother is very strict with the discipline she expects us to maintain at home. If we break the rules, she gets upset and we must be ready to correct our mistakes, but all throughout, I know that she loves me and does it for me to learn the best habits.

She inspires me to be a strong, independent and successful woman. I admire all her qualities, especially how to be the best mother ever!

The Person I Admire Most – My Father

The person who I admire the most is my father. He is a dynamic man who has created a successful path for himself and others too. He is the best at everything he does, and yet is a humble and down-to-earth man.

My father is a doctor. Everyday, he works hard to care for all his patients and their health. I have noticed that even on holidays, he is occupied with following up about his patients’ care and ensuring they are getting better. He treats everyone with the best facilities that he can provide to them.

Becoming a doctor is not easy. It takes years of studies and a lot of money to go to medical college. My father’s family did not have enough means for higher education, but he earned a scholarship and created an opportunity for himself. My grandparents too are very proud of his hard work and success, and they always narrate his stories as an example for me to follow.

My father explained to me that despite good hospitals and clinics in the city, many people do not get good healthcare, because they do not have the means. To ensure that everyone gets the right medical attention, my father also runs a small clinic where he does check-ups for poor people at a nominal charge and provides medication at subsidised rates, so that everyone can afford medical care. He donates some of his own money to this cause to make sure that the clinic never has to say no to any patient. This selfless and generous act makes him a highly respected person in the city. I feel very proud that he is my father.

Despite being in a busy profession, my father spends a lot of quality time with me. We have a Sunday ritual of playing a ‘fathers vs children’ football match in our colony. Not only is he a great player himself, he also coaches me and all the other children to prepare for this weekend match. He is the coolest dad ever!

Because of my love and admiration for him, I don’t like to disappoint him in any way. The one thing he gets upset about is if I don’t work hard towards my studies. He always teaches me that studying hard is the biggest duty that children have towards the future of the society. Whether I score high marks or not, he insists that I must always give my 100% while studying and learning.

My father has taught me a lot, through such moral lessons as well as through the way he has led his own life. I admire his personality and wish to become just like him when I grow up.

The Person I Admire Most – My Teacher

A child’s first interaction beyond home is at school. Once children step out of their home and enter into the big world out there, the one person who holds their hands as a guiding force is their teacher.

I too had one such teacher whom I met on my first day at school. It is since that day that I admire my teacher, Geeta Ma’am, the most in the world. When I went to school for the first time, I was very nervous. I felt like crying and wanted to go back home. That is when Geeta Ma’am came up to me and told me, “It is only the brave ones that have the strength to take a step forward.” This thought inspired me and made take the brave step into the classroom which is where my independent journey started.

Geeta Ma’am is a really fun teacher. Whenever she teaches us something new, she makes us observe some examples of it in the real world to make our lessons more relatable. This way, we understand everything perfectly and never forget what we have once learnt. She comes up with many new and creative activities for us to do in school to make us learn better.

She is every students’ favourite teacher because she is never partial. She pays equal attention to every child, and makes sure no one in the class is too shy to ask their doubts. She is very fair and never favours one child over another.

Every teacher wants their students to focus on studies and score well in exams, but Geeta Ma’am believes in a balanced life. She encourages us to participate in many extracurricular activities to bring out our unique talents. Last month, our school announced a poetry writing competition. Geeta Ma’am encouraged me to participate in it, giving me the confidence that I had good writing skills. I never knew that I had this skill, but she recognised my talent and helped me perfect it. It was all due to her encouragement that I participated and won the competition!

Everyday I learn a lot from Geeta Ma’am, not just bookish knowledge but important life lessons too. She is one of my biggest force of motivation, and I admire her and highly respect her. I wish to accomplish something in life and make her proud.

When your child writes an essay about the person they admire the most, they get an opportunity to reflect upon some of the most desirable qualities in a person. They observe the traits of inspiring people and think about how to achieve these traits themselves.

Expressing these ideas on pen and paper is altogether a different ball game. Children will improve their thinking, analytical, writing and communication skills while writing an essay on this topic. They will expand their vocabulary and be able to express themselves more confidently.

Use the above given examples to guide your child how to write an essay on the person they admire the most. The points given here can serve as a foundation for ideas, based on which they can write the essay on their own.

How to be more concise

The truth about why it’s so hard to be concise, and 9 tactics i use to tighten my communication.

how to write an essay on a person i admire

👋 Hey, it’s  Wes . Welcome to my weekly newsletter on managing up, career growth, and standing out as a high-performer.

⛑️ If you’re looking for a sparring partner and external perspective, I typically work with tech leaders on: Managing up to a CEO/SVP, strengthening your executive communication, increasing your influence, and delegating to a team of ICs while raising the bar. If you’re interested in how I can support you,  learn more about my coaching approach .

In this week’s newsletter, you’ll learn why being concise doesn’t mean skipping details or jumping in with zero context. Here’s what it actually means—and how to do it.

Part I: Common misunderstandings

Part ii: the real reason why it’s so hard to be concise, part iii: ways to be more concise.

Read time : 11 minutes

Almost every operator I know wants to be more concise.

At first glance, it seems simple enough. Speak a little shorter and write fewer words, right?

This begs the question:

If it’s so simple, why aren’t all of us already concise?

I’m not naturally a concise person. I’ve worked with colleagues who were much more naturally succinct. When I asked them for tips on how to be more concise though, they couldn’t explain it—they’ve never been any other way.

For me, it’s a skill I’ve had to hone through active practice and experimentation over the years. While I wouldn’t say it’s my #1 strength, I’ve improved a lot and reaped the benefits in my work.

Here’s what’s worked for me. Let’s dive in.

First, the idea of being concise is often misunderstood, so I want to share my perspective on what it means.

1. Concise does not mean short.

I am painfully aware that this topic attracts attention. (It’s like writing a book about how to be funny. Inevitably, someone won’t laugh at your jokes and will say you’re in no position to write about how to be funny.)

I can already hear folks saying, “Wes, it’s ironic that you wrote an essay that takes X minutes to read, and it’s about being concise. Shouldn’t it be a 1-2 minute read?”

If long-form isn’t for you, that’s cool.

But don’t conflate concision with word count. Being concise is about using an economy of words. It’s maximizing your word “real estate.” It’s about density, not absolute length.

You can have a 1,500-word memo that’s concise. You can have a 150-word memo that’s fluffy and meandering.

2. “It’s not concise enough” is not an excuse to avoid engaging with difficult problems.

It’s a pet peeve of mine when people refuse to engage with anything longer than a few sentences (or god forbid, a few paragraphs) because “you should be more concise.” When you ask for feedback , they say “make it more concise” as if they dropped a rare gem of wisdom.

If you start sharing (necessary) details , they stop you and ask you to explain in a shorter way. They act like you're long-winded, when in reality, the nature of the situation is complex and those details add valuable context .

3. Some ideas can’t be reduced any further.

You know how in math class, you learned to reduce fractions?

You can reduce 22/64 into 11/32. But you can’t reduce 11/32 further even though the number feels kind of big.

It’s the same with ideas. When you try to simplify a topic BEYOND how much it can be simplified, you get into the territory of misrepresenting an idea.

If you write a memo that’s short, but you left out crucial information… This could do harm and lead to poor decision-making.

4. Being concise is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Your goal is to be effective, so you should use as many words as necessary—no more, no less. If you use too few words, you might sacrifice clarity and persuasiveness.

Paul Graham has essays that are 500 words and some that are 3,000+ words. One of his recent essays is 10,455 words.

Is he “not concise” all of a sudden? I'm not saying you should write essays in Slack. But there’s nothing inherently wrong with a “longer” message, as long as it’s clear, value-add, and necessary.

Focus on being effective. Focus on reducing cognitive load. That’s more important than being short for the sake of it.

Alright, now that we are aligned on the premise, I want to discuss advice you’ve probably heard before, like “bottom line up front,” “don’t bury the lede,” and “cut to the chase.”

For years, I tried to take this advice but found it very hard to implement.

Until one day, I realized…

Most of the advice about being concise required one underlying component that wasn’t talked about: clear thinking .

I’ve come to believe that clear thinking is the hard part—it’s the bottleneck to being concise. If you don’t first clarify your ideas, you can’t communicate those ideas concisely.

For example, the common advice below doesn’t highlight the prerequisite of developing a clear understanding of what you want to say.

Bottom line up front (BLUF) : To put the bottom line up front, you have to develop a perspective about what the bottom line is.

Don’t bury the lede : You might have multiple potential ledes. Deciding the lede requires making a choice, and only then can you start with that.

Cut to the chase : What is your most important point? It’s not always obvious. It requires you to think about a few variables: who are you presenting to, how much do they already know, what’s the purpose of this meeting, etc. When you assert those things, then you can cut to the chase.

I believe if we acknowledge the real bottleneck to being concise, it’ll help us be more concise. It’s not necessarily about more tactics. It’s about realizing we may need to take a moment to figure out what we think.

You may be able to share your ideas, yes, but it doesn’t come out clean. It’s not crisp.

This is completely normal. Ideas are often messy because you’re still working through what you believe . When you’re in this phase, be patient with yourself. Find a coworker who you can bounce ideas off of. Write your ideas—the act of writing is a forcing function to help you both clarify what you think and generate new, better ideas.

Over time, if you practice the principles below, you can improve how to quickly think on your feet and be concise.

If you want to think clearly, and therefore communicate concisely, you will likely need to prepare. The higher the stakes, the more you may want to do so.

1. Figure out your main point.

“Figuring out your main point” sounds like one step, but it’s actually multiple steps:

Process the information

Make sense of it

Decide what’s important

Organize it

Say it out loud

It’s hard to do all these cognitive steps simultaneously.

This is why it’s so easy to start rambling: When we speak in a stream of consciousness, there is no information hierarchy, no prioritization (yet)—you’re saying everything as you think of it, with equal weighting.

Now, it’s possible to do all the steps above in succession relatively quickly, depending on how familiar you are with your topic.

If it’s something you’ve explained many times, you’ve already done the work of processing the information—so it’s easier to share concisely. If it’s something new, you might want to take a few seconds to gather your thoughts.

It’s unglamorous. It’s not a shortcut. But it’s what I’ve found consistently works.

Realistically, you might have back-to-back meetings, so “preparation” is more about taking a moment to be center yourself, rather than spending a certain amount of time.

Even a few seconds of preparation can make a positive difference . Ask yourself:

What do you want to get out of this meeting?

What is the most important thing to share?

What action do you need folks to take?

If you’re enjoying this, join 47,000+ other tech operators & subscribe (it’s free):

2. Try to state your main point in 2-3 sentences.

If you aim for one sentence, you’ll have analysis paralysis figuring out THE perfect sentence.

If you aim for ten sentences, it could easily turn into a monologue and spiral out of control.

If you aim for 2-3 sentences, it forces you to state your high-level thesis and what you need from the other person. The point is not to capture everything. The point is to frame the conversation upfront, which “buys you time” with your audience.

Your audience can relax knowing where you’re taking them

They can confirm if this is the right time/place to have this conversation

They can easily focus on the context you share thereafter

When in doubt, ask yourself: How can I explain this in 2-3 sentences? You might end up saying 5-6 sentences, but it’s still better than if you weren’t aiming for something shorter at all.

3. Avoid explaining events chronologically.

We experience events in chronological order, but explaining what happened this way can be confusing for your recipient.

🚫 “Well this happened, then this other thing, and here’s the process of what I did for that. Oh yeah, then this thing but that’s not important, this important thing that’s completely buried, and then this other thing, and…” ✅ “Here’s the important thing I want to discuss. Here's what I need from you. Here are a few sentences about the situation, with the option to elaborate if needed.”

When you say your punchline upfront, you will instantly seem more competent, strategic, and organized. Try to keep the backstory short, and skip the play-by-play of what you did at each step (you can always share this if you're asked about it).

4. Constantly remind yourself to shorten your delivery.

Most of us start with good intentions of being concise. But then you start talking. And before you know it, you’re a few tangents deep and you’ve lost your way.

This is common. It’s why I find it helpful to develop an always-on filter humming in the background as a meta voice that’s hearing yourself talk. That meta voice is asking:

Is this the shortest way you can explain this?

Is this backstory REALLY necessary?

What are you really trying to say? Can you just say that?

Should I get back to my main point?

More on aiming for the minimum viable backstory .

5. Exercise situational awareness.

People who speak in giant run-on sentences seem more junior. Imagine a leader you admire—they probably don’t sound rushed. They breathe in between talking.

It’s hard to stop when you’re on a roll, but try to give people an opportunity to jump in.

Notice if people are starting to lose interest. Don’t ignore those clues and continue powering through. If they aren’t listening anymore, you’re wasting your breath anyway.

Pause sooner than you think and give the other person a chance to respond, so you can evaluate if they’re following along.

Look for a natural stopping point to wrap up. You need to think about how to end gracefully, so you can head in that direction while you’re still talking. It only takes a split second and helps you sound more authoritative.

6. Don’t be too concise.

There is such a thing as being too concise. You might think, “If I’m too concise, my audience can just ask me questions right?”

Yes and no. Here’s an excerpt from my post on how to explain your ideas better :

There is some information you should volunteer without being asked. Do not force other people to do the heavy lifting to draw basic information out of you piece by piece. This is lazy and irresponsible. Especially because the alternative is doable, simple, and relatively fast. Even if you explain well, folks will still have questions because (a) you probably didn’t explain as well as you think and (b) they’ll bring up aspects you didn’t cover. When you cover the basics, you’re setting them up to ask better, more advanced questions.

Don’t leave out crucial information because you were trying to be concise. That’s winning the battle but losing the war.

7. For written communication, use “main point above, context below.”

A common question I get is, “How can I be concise if the details actually matter ? Do I just not share those details? That feels irresponsible.”

Sometimes the context and explanation is just as important as whatever your bottom line is. This is why I love the framework I call “main point above, context below.” It’s a riff on the military framework BLUF (bottom line up front).

When you separate the main point from your context, you allow your reader to immediately understand your point, then get more details.

You give your reader agency because they can read as much or as little of the context as they need.

🚫 [Actions, backstory, and context jumbled together] ✅ [Main point above, context below]

8. For longer verbal communication, use signposting.

In a written medium like Slack or email, you have time to edit. But in a live conversation, it’s all happening in real-time.

In writing, your audience can skim at their own pace, reread anything that requires a second look, and see the overall structure of the page to understand what’s to come.

In verbal communication, though, your audience is limited by your pacing and what you reveal line by line. This is why it’s helpful to frame the conversation upfront—tell them where you’re taking them.

Examples of signposting when you speak:

“For context, we left off last week with [the problem the team was facing]. So I took a stab at solving these issues, and today I will review the changes I made.” “The part that’s most important to point out is…” “First, I’ll give a quick high-level view of the three major changes, then I’ll highlight specific in-product copy changes that I believe make the experience more intuitive.”

More on signposting and emotional signposting .

9. Offer to elaborate.

Don’t just say, “I can elaborate on anything.”

That puts the mental load on the other person to come up with good questions . If you’re the project owner and closest to the issue, you should proactively assert what to share.

🚫 “Let me know what you want to know.” ✅ “I can elaborate more on a few areas: For example, the other options I looked at, including (a) if we optimized for speed and could get this done in a week, (b) cheaper/more expensive options that I thought weren’t worth it, and (c) looking ahead a few steps, the risks I foresee and how I’m planning to derisk.”

The goal of being concise is to create understanding as quickly and easily as possible . Therefore, simply being succinct isn’t enough. You must also be clear, compelling, and coherent too.

It’s usually much easier to identify ways other people can be more concise than to catch it for yourself. When I coach my clients, I interrupt them and point out where they could have been more concise, then have them rephrase what they said to make it more concise. We drill, and it can take several attempts.

If you’re trying this yourself, I recommend saying different versions of the same thing in increasingly more concise ways. See how far you can push yourself.

2. This is more of a +1 to the article, but the more concise the message, the easier it is to rally teams/groups around that and build consensus.

How writing makes me a better parent

Whether it's writing or something else, finding your outlet is important.

Parenting is hard. It’s physically and emotionally draining. The days can feel endless, and perhaps even worse, the nights can feel even longer. Is there something longer than endless? Yes. Webster’s defines “longer than endless” as nights spent with children who don’t sleep and also the amount of time it takes for children under age seven to get dressed in the morning.

I know I’m not breaking any news here, but when you’re a parent, particularly a stay-at-home parent whose primary function is to care for children all day, the tedium and routine can obscure larger truths. Children are remarkable. Being the parent of children is remarkable. I’ve been a parent for more than a decade, I have three children, and when I take a moment to think about how far we’ve come together, I’m still amazed.

These little people who are growing and learning and flourishing in front of my eyes are part of me. They are funny and charming. They consistently surprise me with their insightfulness. However, all these good qualities can get lost in the frustration of crayons being dumped on the floor and intractable stubbornness at dinner time.

Sometimes I can go days without appreciating what I have. Instead, I focus on completing tasks and checking them off my mental list. Wake up. Get the kids out of bed and fed. Get them dressed. Get them to school. Pick them up. Get them to do something that doesn’t involve a screen. Snacks. Do homework. Play. Dinner. Baths. Pajamas. Bedtime. Dishes. Laundry. Go to sleep. Repeat.

Because I’m a task-completion junkie, any hitches in the routine can leave me aggravated. And so, if I’m not careful, I’m aggravated a lot. I get annoyed because my kids won’t get dressed quickly enough or won’t eat or won’t stop watching TV. I get annoyed when they get too dirty playing outside or refuse to come inside when a sudden Florida rainstorm rolls in. I often realize in the moment that I’m getting frustrated for no good reason, but recognition isn’t enough. The frustration persists even when I can put a name to it.

Telling myself to do better doesn’t help. What does help? Writing.

I write mostly at night, long after the kids are in bed. I stay up too late, so I’m always tired, but it’s worth it because writing allows me to process the events of the day and to recalibrate. The little annoyances I experience usually seem funny when I write about them. And the sweet moments that hardly register as they are happening often make me tear up when I’m putting them into words, typing them into my laptop, and protecting them from the vagaries of an unreliable memory.

When I write, even if it’s just a hundred words, a quick anecdote, or notes about a day lived, I feel different. Better. Stronger. The next morning when my day starts, I’m usually a little more patient. A little less vulnerable to the creeping demons of annoyance and frustration. Well, at least for a few hours. Writing doesn’t convert me into an enlightened yogi, it just helps me remember there is a forest and not just trees. And despite all the tedium, when I’m with my kids, I am experiencing something transcendent. Even when crayons are all over the floor and forgotten bananas are hiding in the playroom.

When parenting gets you down, maybe try to write it out. Or if writing doesn’t do it for you, find that thing that helps you see more clearly. You’ll be better for it. And your kids will be better for it, too.

Bari Weiss Knows Exactly What She’s Doing

The founder of The Free Press has built a new media empire by persuading audiences that she is a teller of dangerous truths.

Bari Weiss has long been blessed with two superpowers, those close to her say: She knows how to make useful enemies, and she knows how to make useful friends.

As the founder, public face and heat-seeking curator of The Free Press, a new media company with ambitions to overtake the old media, Ms. Weiss, 40, has identified a mélange of reliable foils: the illiberal left; diversity, equity and inclusion programs; opponents of Israel; The New York Times, where Ms. Weiss worked until 2020.

For her sins against groupthink, Ms. Weiss has suggested, she faced eviction from the media “cool kids’ table,” without regret.

“I don’t need to be with the beautiful people,” she said at a conference in San Diego recently, hosted by an asset management executive who describes himself as her devoted groupie. “I’m OK being with the nerds.”

In fact, luminaries from both camps appear to enjoy her company.

With her news and opinion site (characteristic headlines: “Camping Out at Columbia’s Communist Coachella,” “The Secret Service Failed. What’s That Have to Do With DEI?”), a popular podcast (“Honestly with Bari Weiss”) and a lucrative turn on the speechmaking circuit, Ms. Weiss has amassed high status in what might be considered the no-tribes tribe of American power.

She has created, or at least created space at, a cool kids’ table all her own, positioning herself as a teller of dangerous truths while becoming a kind of brand ambassador for the views and passions of her audience, which often seem to track neatly with her own: that elite universities have lost the plot; that legacy outlets have lost their minds; that Ms. Weiss knows the way forward.
